Why do think someone's mother becomes irrelevant in their life because the are dating? By that logic you should have zero influence when your high schooler is dating then but doubtful anyone of you are going to remain completely silent about that.

High schoolers are under 18 so not legal adults. As far as for 18+, mother isn't irrelevant but a relationship is between two consenting legal adults and mother isn't relevant unless her child is mentally incompetent.
