Seeing 15-20% price increases at my favorite restaurants , not tipping will just carry out

Lots of people are doing take-out now, and servers are often the ones packing up the take-out orders. Servers make an hourly rate of $4 an hour; they really count on tips. Your cheaping out hurts them. These are people trying to make a living and everything has gotten more expensive for them too. Would the extra $10 bucks really hurt you?

They should be paid per each order then? Or maybe they can pack up 10prser an hour? Volume is going to be the need for takeout and then the robots will be doing a better job.

We shouldn't artificially subsidize the market correction, this is the new norm , if this was the original temporary 2 weeks or one year pause but it's not, it's a permanent change. Restaurant industry needs to reinvent itself , something that is takeout or delivery based on volume, high quality and affordable is what consumers want.

You call and order Chinese they run your card at pickup.
You don’t tip. Same for any other carry out. That’s part of business.

You only tip for table service or delivery.

A fool is quickly parted from their money.

It's probably restaurant workers trying to guilt people into tipping

I asked about this on the WaPo restaurant live chat many years ago and Sietsema recommended 10% for takeout so that’s what I do.

This is so weird because I was going to say the same thing — I asked about it! I was doing more like 18-20% during the pandemic but since vaccinations have fully rolled out I went back to 10%. I appreciated the health risks those packers were undertaking when there was little PPE and no vaccines.

Screw that. The kids at the local bistro/cafe told me they get to keep 100% of the tips. Just to hand people their to-go food! I figured the cooks were getting a share of the tips, nope.

We'll still tip. We don't have a lot of money, but there are places we can cut back. Too many workers depend on tips.

Actually the cooks don’t put the food in the bags, put utensils in etc.

If you can’t afford to tip you can’t afford to eat out.

We tip $5 in cash on every takeout and have done this for decades.

You cheap bastards.

And I bought a cod fillet at Harris teeter at the same exact price I bought it at 3 years ago.

Overall, prices have increased. Certain foods are more expensive and other foods are the same.

Most people with a budget buy the less expensive foods in the same category and go on with their lives. Or get takeout less and still tip.

Yet here we are on page 5 of "it’s too much"

Well, which way do you want it?

The difference is that we are still supposed to be tipping on the whole bill. The theory is that $15 min wage would allow us to not tip. What we see is what we get. We still have to add on 20% at this point.

If you are tipping the same amount you were decades ago, you're being stingy and cheap. If you were tipping $5 in 1990, that's $10.67 today. Catch up.

I tip on take out. I’m will say it’s annoying now that every quick food place now has that iPad thing that asks about a tip at check out. Like dude I just bought some water, do I need to give you a tip?

You should give twice as much from now on since you have given nothing.

+1. A little generosity from many goes a long way.
