Get used to variants and living with covid like the yearly cold. We aren't in the same place as we were back in late 2019-2020. Our arsenal for therapies is much bigger now. Even drugs that don't directly target the virus will help reduce severity and hospital stays.

Big whoop, life moves on.

What is your point? Do you want scientists to stop researching new variants? Do you think a virus isn't capable of mutating enough to present us with new problems?

The point is that if you look hard enough you're always going to find variants. Big whoopdie doo. There are many scientists out there looking to make a name for themselves by stoking fear over every variant they find. If you study the cold virus guess what? You'll find that it mutates constantly. So friggin' what? Stop with the fear mongering. The economy is going to open. Covid will spread and mutate. Oh well. Humans will learn to live with it. We don't stop the world because there's a much more dangerous bug out there like multidrug resistant TB now do we?

No but we do want the collective panics to end

Honestly I hear far more "big whoop" and "nothing burger" sentiment than panic. Is there a rush on toilet paper at your local Target? Didn't think so.

Maybe the media should report that instead then

It seems from this thread that many of you don't want them to report on Omicron at all. I came here to see where the case was in California since I know public health folks at UCSF, but 2 out of 3 posts are here apparently just to let us know that they don't care. We get it.

You could google "Omicron California" if that's what you were after. It would have been faster in almost every scenario.

The initial reports didn't say SF, and so I came here after that. Considering the thread title, I don't think that was a bad assumption. Apparently it's really an incognito support group for people who are "over it".

Rather, it’s the majority that just DGAF any more. Let me guess. There’s going to be a surge of cases. Almost everybody will recover. Cases will wane. Then a new variant will come along for a minority to get all worked up about.

DCUM has really gone downhill with Covid.

What should be the headline is that deaths continue to drop but instead it’s all about the new variant.

Its just a select group trying to justify their craziness in denying covid.

Nobody denies Covid, they deny that the crazy reactions to it are worth it

I think most reasonable people can handle hearing about changing aspects of the pandemic and recognize that the news is often after hype without jumping to a weird ‘nope, don’t care’ reaction. And I don’t think most people are ‘hiding in basements’ anymore, so that narrative is played. Yes, there re some restrictions (not many), and none of them seem that onerous, at least in my opinion. I do think as we learn more about the virus and kids have the opportunity to be fully vaccinated, things will continue to get back to normal. But let’s not forget people in many other countries are not in as good of a position as us, so for the world, it isn’t over.

Sometimes I wonder how many people it actually is who post this stuff, or if it's just a couple people sockpuppeting. And if it's the same people who've been posting "stop panicking" "don't be hysterical" "nothingburger" etc, etc since spring of 2020.

Because there is a concerted effort in our country to help Covid spread for political reasons. And it seems to be working, looking at the latest polls on how people think Biden has handled Covid. Despite doing everything he could to bring down the case count, people still blame him and not the anti-science GOP for our Covid woes.

So omicron is just a result of looking too hard? Good to know.

You're missing the point. There are variants. Scientists should be discussing them. But right now omicron is being presented in the news as a big threat, yet there is no actual data to back that up. Under a microscope, scientists think it looks like it may evade vaccines. But there is no data to back that up. And countries all over the world are closing borders based on this possiblity with no real data.

You literally accused scientists of stoking fear to make a name for themselves.

A new variant of course is a threat. Don't minimize covid.
