Read "Under the Banner of Heaven" and "Going Clear." L. Ron Hubbard just took a page out of the Jospeh Smith playbook. They are both transparently made up religions. |
| I saw it years ago when it first opened and remember being extremely offended by the racism. My husband and I almost left but he felt like we should see it through in order to give a fair analysis. Neither of us was happy we stayed. I read that article about how it is being changed now, and am glad for it, but I still have no desire to see it again. |
| I went to the Book of Mormons when it was hot on Broadway. I didn't think it was very funny or entertaining. It was pretty lame. I didn't find it offensive, just dull. |
| It’s fine. Mormons/LDS is not a religion. It’s a cult. It should be mocked. |
Also saw it when it was hot on Broadway- I still don’t think the songs are particularly good, but I found it entertaining enough at the time. There are so many better musicals but I did like seeing something more creative, edgy and different. It originally premiered a decade ago and I really doubt it would’ve had the same success with an initial run today. I’m also a black progressive who loves SP (and musicals) and doesn’t take things too seriously. |
How about you read the history of religion??? Jesus came back from the dead so now catholics eat his body every Sunday to remember that he was executed? Come on. |

I really don't think many people going to see Book of Mormon really believe that this is a documentary or actual representation of Mormonism.
It is intended to have taken very liberal artistic license to present the subject as comedically as possible. This is no different than the very liberal interpretation of Catholicism in the Nunsense series by Dan Goggin (which has made it to six sequels and three spin-offs to date). |

Yes it was vulgar, but it was also… heartwarming. If you haven’t seen it, read up on it before you draw conclusions: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Book_of_Mormon_(musical)

this probably sounds offensive, but whatever. Granted I only know three Mormons (and their families) but all three of them are super smart and accomplished. one of them is my neighbor. his PhD is in nuclear physics or something like that from UC Berkeley. And his wife has a master's degree in French literature. Genuinely nice people, very well put together, super sweet and well behaved kids. It just...like... damn, for folks who believe that Joseph Smith made the correct translation for the Book of Mormon off of hieroglyphics on a golden plate in upstate New York... ya'll sure are educated and have your sh*t together. I really don't get it. |

Mormonism is a cult and I see nothing wrong with mocking. I absolutely loved Book of Mormon.
You should also check out exmormons of tiktok for some really incredible Mormon cult mocking. |
Former Mormon here. I see where you're coming from, but think of how many people believe in the literal virgin birth or any number of christian beliefs. In the US we are very entrenched in Judeo Christian monotheism so it's hard to see just how weird it is, but if you take a step back, it's weird. |
I'm Catholic, we believe some pretty bizarre things. I once found myself trying to explain "adoration" to someone who had very little experience with religion. "So, usually after the priest turns the piece of bread into Jesus's body, then we eat it. Unless you have wheat allergies or celiac, then you shouldn't eat it, because even though it really truly actually is a piece of Jesus's body, it will still give you anaphylaxis. . . . Why? . . . . Well that's a mystery. Anyway, sometimes no one eats it and we put it in a box, and then you can sit and look at the box, and adore it. . . . " I mean, I do it, but if you step back and try to explain it? It's weird. But I'd totally go see a musical making fun of us. I can see why mormons like the Book of Mormon. |
Please read upon what Mormons actually believe and what the religion does to women and children before you post again. It destroyed my family when a relative married in to it. Read under the Banner of Heaven and just Wikipedia before you oust. Read “a good death” under Wikipedia. Just educate yourself. It’s all out there. |
A Republican advertising that he doesn’t understand what “punching down” is or why it’s bad. |
+1 And make sure you don’t start with any Mormon material. “Milk before meat” is a good way not to find out that all Mormon men believe they’re on the same level as God, will get their own planets in the afterlife and if they decide not to use their wife’s secret name that they make up, she can’t get onto his planet. Do they still mime ritual disembowelment in their stolen from the Masons Temple procedures? |
