Is Book of Mormon mocking Mormons and if so, why is that ok?

As much as people want to try to claim that the South Park creators are “equal opportunist” I think you realize that if they had created a 2 hour musical purely aimed at mocking the religious beliefs of Jews or Muslims it would have been received very differently by mainstream public opinion.

Exactly this.
And when I watched SP last time... they didn’t touch any black issues with a 10 ft pole.

What about mocking Islam in a predominantly Muslim state. That should be ok since they are not the oppressed in those states.

Mocking Islam never goes over well...

Swap out Mormonism for Judaism or Catholicism and tell me if it works. Or am I misunderstanding what the show is about? I’m curious to hear from people who have seen it.

I did not like Book of Mormon. I did not like the mocking of the main character. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I am not Mormon. I lean UU.

Mormonism was picked randomly. They literally put all religions into a hat and pulled one out. It’s hysterical because it’s universal.

Where are you getting this?

The creators here said that they very specifically set out to do something about mormons/LDS: https://www.vulture.com/2011/03/trey_parker_and_matt_stone_tal.html

Is the Native American thing true? Is that what he said?

Did you not see what happened to Charlie Hebdo? The Book of Mormon producers like having their heads attached to their bodies so picked a safer target.

All religion should be mocked. Period. I grew up with Mormons and my sister is a Mormon. It is not a nice religion (not that others are better). They have some really racist beliefs. They are extremely anti-LGBT. They also baptized the graves of Holocaust victims.

And it is literally a complete farce. I mean all religions are made up but compared to other religions Mormonism was made up like last week. The better question is why isn’t it mocked more frequently?

There's a lot of truth to this - yes the show makes fun of Mormons, of course

Yes, when I hear just how whackadoodle it is I am inclined to wonder if Mormonism is an elaborate prank they are pulling over on us. Or just a giant tax shelter. It should not even be considered a true religion, akin to Scientology.

I’m an atheist, like South Park, but found it mean and not really funny at all.
