My realtor didn't give a housewarming gift after closing.

I'm a little disappointed. Is that not done anymore? She took me to see houses over two separate days - I picked one and closed within thirty days. She's a very good realtor.

I got one from my realtor? Do you want it? It's just taking up space and I will never use it. It's a very heavy cutting board -- carved with our name and a message. But, seriously, you can have it!

I think your expectation is silly.

I beg your pardon?

I was grateful for my real estate agent's loyal service on my finicky and difficult person and felt like giving *her* a gift.

As it happens no gifts were exchanged upon closing because she and I both fell ill... but I fail to see why you would EXPECT a gift.

Previously it had been a gesture of "thank you for your business and welcome to the neighborhood" - a gift certificate to a local place, a welcome basket, etc. I asked if it was no longer customary.

Mine treated us to lunch. Which I thought was nice and unnecessary.

Its normal, they probably didnt get the vibe that you would ever use them again so they didnt want to waste money.

I gave ours a gift. She made us a huge batch of homemade cookies. What were you expecting?

It's a courtesy not a requirement. Many agents still give housewarming gifts, but not every agent does anymore. My not so extensive experience (and anecdotal evidence from friends) says that older and more experienced realtors are more likely to do so, but younger and less experienced agents are less likely to do so.

I swear I read this exact thread a few months ago.

Nothing came up in the search results.

Relative paid 2M cash and bought after looking at just 4 houses in one weekend. Nada.

They must have said something to you if you know this. What did they say?

I am not thus poster but probably something like- WTF, my buyers agent just pocketed between 20,000 to 40,000 dollars for less than a days work. It would have been nice to get a token 100 dollar gift certificate to a neighborhood restaurant, or some other gift.

We have bought/sold seven homes. Closing on our 8th in about a week. Some of our agents have given us a gift and some haven't. I think it's nice, but not necessary. The best gift we ever received from an agent was a really nice wooden bluebird house. We have taken it with us on moves all over the country and overseas.

My realtor gave me a gift card ($100?) to the Great American Restaurant chain. I was busy getting settled in my house, and by the time I used it, the fees had eaten away the entire $100. (Very embarrassing when it was rejected. Thankfully it was just with a relative). Bummer.
