Good, it’s overdue - and likely to be limited to certain circumstances like ending a shutdown rather than a wholesale end, just like budget reconciliation has not meant an end to the filibuster. If Dems wanted to prevent this, they could have voted for the CR. |
You really think Tuesday? They don't even start the roll call until 530 pm on Monday. What is the quickest turn around time? |
DP - if this passes late Monday night, Wednesday is likely the earliest people would need to report back. Keep in mind also that Tuesday is Election Day in NJ and VA, and both parties care about the results. My guess is late next week at the earliest and probably by Veterans Day. |
The filibuster was fundamentally anti-democratic. If you have a majority, you should be passing legislation. They’re going to pass a lot of garbage legislation but it’s time to let people start feeling the effects of what they vote for. Until people start making the connection between politicians and bad policies, we will be in this endless pendulum forever. |
They don’t have the votes for this. While Trump is too dumb to realize it, most of the republican senators realize the filibuster helps them way more than it helps democrats. |
But next time it may give democrats more power. Which is why they don’t want to do it. |
This would be very good for democrats. The filibuster is what prevents democrats from enacting their policies when they get a trifecta. It doesn’t slow down republicans much because most everything they want to do is exempt from filibuster. |
I don't understand this actually. Keeping this non-political, I have to think that if key R senators don't want to do this, they are afraid of something but I'm not sure what. They must be afraid that it will help Ds more but I'm not seeing the thread. |
+1. They arent getting rid of the filibuster for this exact reason. |
His wife and family packed up and left him. |
Under current rules, it is much easier to stop doing something than to start doing something. That advantages the R side because they want a small government. Without the filibuster, for example, Ds could come in and institute Medicare-for-all with 50 senators and the VP. |
Also, tax cuts, which is always the number 1 republican policy priority, are exempt from the filibuster under reconciliation |
Senators listen to Don Trump. They remember Jan 6th. |
What do you mean next time? |
