This raises an interesting question: how much of these aid dollars result in material benefits to marginalized people and how much is to pay for staffing and other costs?

Good. The US government shouldn’t be giving any money to religious organizations.

If catholic groups want to help they can do their own grassroots fundraising.

This money isn't going to the church, it's going to a service organization that provides government services. Not anymore, I guess. DOGE has deleted those government services. Sorry folks who were receiving those services. Tough luck, I guess. Shoulda done better.

From the link:

CRS reaches more than 200 million people in 121 countries on five continents, according to its website

Among the programs and services provided by CRS: water and sanitation, education, agriculture, health, microfinancing, climate change resilience, as well as justice and peace-building programs in addition to emergency and disaster assistance.

CRS had 7,000 employees worldwide as of 2018 when it marked its 75th anniversary.

How about this?

That's why agency. is going to shut down and money is going to be saved. Good work

I’m not worried about giving it to a church in a relief capacity or a religiously affiliated purely social service org like CRS or Catholic Charities. My question is more along the lines of this:

If USAID makes a grant to CRS for $100 how much of that $100 will be spent actually delivering MATERIAL benefit to marginalized people and how much is spent on administration? Will that be $10 dollars in medicine out of that $100 that reaches poor people or $90?

2023 Financial Statements for CRS don’t lay it out clearly. Looks like as much as 20-25% of revues of are for employee comp, but then sub grants, contractor fees, etc… are also big chunks of percentage of revenue.

The obvious answer here could be just making cash transfers to targeted recipients but that would also cause problems.

The Politico amount was over 8 years and for subscriptions across the whole agency. Like you know how you might pay for the Wall Street Journal or Thompson/ Reuters? Like that. Stop trying to misinform people.

I don’t care. NOT an appropriate use of taxpayer money. They can buy their own subscriptions.

And, nearly half a million for 37 subscriptions?

Yes it is. Have you ever had a job before?

Yes. And I paid for my own subscriptions and memberships to professional organizations. Taxpayers should NOT be footing the bill.

When it is so americans abroad and american offices abroad can keep current, it is. Fox gets subscription money too as well as the Wall Street Journal. Why aren't you complaining about those?

Show us the receipts.
And ALL subscriptions should be terminated. They have the internet in foreign countries.

Who at USAID received how much money back from Politico to buy those subscriptions?

I just did a search and found reports. What Elon is claiming is fake. The stuff he claimed the money was for is fake, it's actually been for combating AIDS and with COVID also provided health services for that as well, it's not "transgender opera" or whatever nutty crap Elon is claiming. Also the numbers are grossly exaggerated, they received nowhere near that much from USAID.

The tweet that everyone is staring at while commenting literally says the money is for AIDS. Just read the damn screenshot in the tweet.

"To target this tiny portion of the federal budget in such a haphazard and irresponsible way is going to cost people's lives and livelihoods," Colecchi said. "It is not a thoughtful or humane way to go about treating programs that help the poorest of the poor all over the world."

Can you imagine the outrage that would've happened if either Biden or Harris had cut off all USAID funds to Catholic Relief Services? They probably would've been impeached.

We aren’t fixing our roads because Republicans like to block the appropriation of transportation funds. We have plenty of money for roads without watching starving children waste away after teasing them with hope. Where is your humanity? Don’t you think devastated populations in Africa are more likely to be hostile to the USA after living in squalor? Don’t warlords rise up when populations are struggling? Hello?

Educate yourself fool. The subscription was for intelligence resources, not the freakin internet.

It wasn't about shutting down USAID. IT was about finding out who was getting money from this. So many members of Congress are compromised because Elon got him the evidence that they were taking money to send out money from USAID.

You just made that up out of thin air.

It was about shutting down USAID. And freezing all foreign aid (which unlike freezing grant funding that was enjoined is still frozen - although the grant funding still seems to be frozen).

If I am right, we would never know about it, because it is more important to have the members of Congress working for Trump now.
