College Football--Big Ten Expansion

They've had a few bad years but they went to bowls every year 2009-2018, including 3 Rose Bowls an Orange Bowl, and a Fiesta Bowl. They were 4-2 in the Covid year, so it hasn't been forever since they were decent. I will be interested to see what their options end up being. Nerd Nation and Cal are in a tough spot.

Add Notre Dame and Stanford. Drop Cal

I think Stanford and UC Berkley will be in tough spot----Oregon and Washington ultimately go to the BIG 10, Washington State and Oregon State get downgraded to the MWC. Can't see Stanford and Berkely ending up in the MWC.

Would be too much travel for Stanford.

Utah has a strong football program and a very loyal fan base.

ASU is a huge university. Lots of students and alumni.

Why would the Big 12 not want Cal or Stanford versus Utah and ASU? The markets and streaming #s are mostly there with BYU and Arizona (assuming Arizona jumps). Adding a Bay Area school makes a lot of sense $$ wise in the future versus a secondary 4-corners school.

Utah and ASU have bigger fanbases and better football programs, make more geographic sense, and already have natural rivals in the Big 12

Interesting thoughts & observations.

With Oregon & Washington moving to the Big Ten Conference, the Pac-12 is almost certainly going to lose Arizona, ASU, and Utah to the Big 12 Conference next week.

As for further expansion in the Big Ten in years from now, it might be Notre Dame & Georgia Tech.

Poor Stanford. No options. Same for UCal-Berkeley.

I would absolutely love of Stanford's endowment to spend a small percentage of last years gains and invest in Fox or CBS to force the Big10 to choose between either accepting Stanford or not renegotiating the contract to account for Washington and Oregon

Whether or not to invite Stanford to the Big Ten.

At this point, the main reason to do so would be as an additional lure to Notre Dame.

How do we know this ? Because if only one more school is added, the remaining spot is for the obvious target = Notre Dame.

Solid strategy as Stanford adds academic prestige to the Big Ten Conference.

Welcome Stanford !

(OP again):

After the University of Washington officially joins the Big Ten Conference, the two most Big Ten schools not in the Big Ten Conference are:

Notre Dame & Cornell University.

Cornell by what measure?

Notre Dame is hardly the large research university that makes up most of the Big Ten. It is well regarded academically but is comparatively more small-time research wise.
The Big Ten absolutely wants them for football but it isn't the match a place like Cal would be as an actual school.

Targeting Utah and ASU is a checkers move...
