Political Discussion
Telling a 5 YO boy that if they "feel like" a girl and they can change to be a girl is just blatantly anti-science. It is at the very least confusing for a 5 YO. You cannot change your sex. You just can't. |

Taylor & Francis has junk science. But even their studies say <20%
Still haven’t seen “several reputable studies” supporting “The vast majority of gender dysphoric youth go on to identify as their biological sex” or “the percentage that go on to identify as their birth gender by young adulthood, and the above study shows 80%.” |
We are discussing gender, not sex. |
Not sure why that doesn’t make sense to you. They are two different diagnoses. |
Gender does NOT supersede sex. Gender USED to be a term interchangeable with "sex" to designate male or female. One's sex cannot be changed. A 5 YO does not understand the concept of "gender" as it is currently used. There is no place for gender instruction in the elementary years. |
They are two different things. Sounds like you are stuck in the past. Here’s a good explanation for you: https://medicine.yale.edu/news-article/what-do-we-mean-by-sex-and-gender/ Hope that clarified things for you. Why would there be an age restriction on gender instruction? Kids will get it much more easily than some of the old-timers on this thread. They also understand why it’s important to be nice to everyone. Maybe you can learn something from these kids. |
You think that’s going to make sense to a five year old? |
"There have been eleven research studies to date indicating a high rate of resolution of gender incongruence in children by late adolescence or young adulthood without medical interventions (Cantor, 2020; Ristori & Steensma, 2016; Singh et al., 2021). An attempt has been made to discount the applicability of this research, suggesting that the studies were based on merely gender non-conforming, rather than truly gender-dysphoric, children (Temple Newhook et al., 2018). However, a reanalysis of the data prompted by this critique confirmed the initial finding: Among children meeting the diagnostic criteria for “Gender Identity Disorder” in DSM-IV (currently “Gender Dysphoria in DSM-5), 67% were no longer gender-dysphoric as adults; the rate of natural resolution for gender dysphoria was 93% for children whose gender dysphoria was significant but subthreshold for the DSM diagnosis (Zucker, et al., 2018)." The information regarding the resolution of gender dysphoria among those with adolescent-onset gender dysphoria, which is currently the predominant presentation, is less clear. A growing body of evidence suggests that for many teens and young adults, a post-pubertal onset of transgender identification can be a transient phase of identity exploration, rather than a permanent identity, as evidenced by a growing number of young detransitioners (Entwistle, 2020; Littman, 2021; Vandenbussche, 2021). Previously, the rate of detransition and regret was reported to be very low, although these estimates suffered from significant limitations and were likely undercounting true regret (D’Angelo, 2018). However, in the last several years since gender-affirmative care has become popularized, the rate of detransition appears to be accelerating." https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0092623X.2022.2046221# |
What exactly is “high rate”? Very subjective wording. Links to these studies? |
Not the medical definition, but young kids won’t struggle neatly as much as you. Sit back and learn something from them. Learn how to kind and respectful of people who are different than you. |

This poster clearly doesn't understand how references work and is too lazy to actually read the attached link because they don't want to admit they are wrong. |
DP. Then you should look up the definition of “gender dysphoria,” look up the definition of “depression,” and compare the two. There is a difference between feeling like your body doesn’t make your gender, and feeling deeply depressed because you are terrified to let your parents know who you really are. If your could can talk to you about their gender dysphoria, then you can help them work through it, whatever that path looks like. If they can’t be honest about it, then they end up with a very different type of mental health crisis. |
If you make a claim, put up or shut up. It’s not that hard. |
Absolutely it is important for these kids to have support and get comprehensive psychotherapy to truly understand their gender dysphoria. A lot of kids with gender dysphoria have other mental health issues including anxiety and depression, a history of eating disorders, are on the autism spectrum, a history of trauma or sexual abuse. They need to have an extensive evaluation to see the root of what is going on but unfortunately with the current gender affirmation model most kids are not getting this. Instead they are quickly being pushed down the medical pathway leading to irreversible changes to their body. Those posters pointing out the issues are not hateful bigots but are concerned because kids are getting hurt due to the lack of safeguards in place. |
