FCPS comprehensive boundary review

There is a lot of misinformation in this response.

1. There are parts of Chantilly Highlands that were built in the late 1970s. Franklin Farm was built in 1982-1985. Therefore, your statement about Franklin Farm being the population of Oak Hill until Chantilly Highlands was built doesn't make sense. Chantilly Highlands was finished after Franklin Farm, but it existed quite a while ago!

2. The Navy section of Franklin Farm is not at all adjacent to Thompson Road. The Navy section of Franklin Farm is off Nestlewood. The part of Franklin Farm that is adjacent to Thompson Road is off Tuckaway, and those kids go to Crossfield.

3. The statement about staying at Oak Hill vs going to Crossfield is bizarre. I went to Crossfield the year it opened (1988), and I had friends who lived off Tuckaway, Dower House, and Willow Glen. We all went to Crossfield and then Franklin and then Oakton.

4. Oak Hill has lots of buses, and their boundaries are not mostly walkers! For example, the kids who live in Emerald Chase and Bradley Farms are certainly not going to walk to Oak Hill.

1. A very small portion of Chantilly Highlands existed prior to very late '80's. It was not completed until '90's.
2. I stand corrected on Thompson Rd. issue. But, I was told they stayed at Oak Hill when others went to Crossfield because they fought the move. Oak Hill was much closer and Fairfax County Parkway was not yet completed in that area. Again, I was told that by someone who was here at the time.
3. And, where did your neighborhood go before it went to Crossfield? Pretty sure it was Oak Hill. 1988 tracks with the expansion of Chantilly Highlands.
4. Oak Hill has lots of buses now because of the AAP center. The kids who live in Emerald Chase and that small portion of Bradley Farms did not attend Oak Hill until the South Lakes redistricting in 2008. I think they were at Floris prior to that. The only bus kids in the '90's were the Franklin Farm kids who had to cross Franklin Farm Rd. The greatest part of the boundary is walking distance.

They’d need to drastically shift elementary school boundaries for any of this to make sense.

Hunt Valley is the farthest WSHS school from Lewis.

This leaked map just does not make sense.

It's also the farthest from WSHS.....

It doesn't make sense to me either, but if they are really looking to move a whole elementary school out of WSHS, Hunt Valley is the only option. I think there are better ways to alleviate the "crowding" (which I'm not fully convinced of) at WSHS, but nonetheless, if a whole elementary is gonna go, it's gonna be HV.

You really aren't making any sense.

If you were arguing to move HV to South County or Keene Mill to Lewis, you might have credibility.

But arguing that Hunt Valley should be moved past 5 other WSHS zoned elementary schools all the way to Lewis completely destroys any argument you have.

Makes perfect sense. The farthest school from WSHS should move to Lewis . How does that not make sense. We need more kids at Lewis, not South County. Stop with this argument.

No it doesn't.

They are the farthest elementary school to Lewis.

So simple, so logical, way over the SB’s heads.

It is simple. It is logical. But, it requires work.

Lots easier to move kids and cover it up.

Yep. Imagine what a great education ALL of our kids would be receiving if they spent all this time and money on staffing and curriculum.

Move Bren Mar Park out of Twain/Holmes/Edison to Key/Lewis (it probably fits better at Annandale, but I believe they are already at capacity). This frees up space at Edison to account for the new neighborhoods they plan to build where the government center currently is located on Franconia and where the old Top Golf used to be. This doesn’t have to be done immediately since those projects haven’t broken ground yet, but it could easily happen when those projects get started.

Move some of the Hunt Valley neighborhoods south of the parkway to Newington Forest and South County. Put LLIV in at HV and Orange Hunt, and then send all of Sangster neighborhood to Lake Braddock, and the Keene Mill attendance island to White Oaks/Lake Braddock. Sangster would have to stay the AAP center for HV/OH, but with LLIV, fewer kids from outside the pyramid would elect to go there. Some rebalancing might have to occur in the elementaries in West Springfield after all this to balance out the capacities at the schools and make sure no one is too crowded, but they could all stay at WSHS, which is the closest school for the vast majority of West Springfield. And it gets some kids out of WSHS. I’m not buying that WSHS is bursting at the seams right now, but apparently the board is concerned about it.

This suggestion makes perfect sense.

They should fire the consultant and hire you.

So the answer is to move another poor elementary school to Lewis???

Of course. They always want to consolidate the poors into a few schools. That is exactly how we got here now though.

No. That is not how we got here. We got here because of changes in the communities. This happens over time. And, then communities can come back--without taking kids from other communities. "Start by making the school more attractive. Spending time and money on renaming was not helpful. Adding a social justice academy is not helpful. What would be helpful? Preparing the kids for the future by making them employable in good jobs. That comes from teaching them basic skills for starters and then encouraging them to reach higher.

Well, you forgot uncontrolled immigration. And the fact that the last couple of times they moved students out of Lee/Lewis they took wealthier neighborhoods and moved them to other schools, particularly West Springfield.

Bingo. This is it exactly. They made sure the poor kids went to Lewis (Lee). And now they're going to kick and scream so the SB doesn't shift things around to share the burden. That poster either "forgot" or are newer to the area.

Isn’t that what the so called “leaked map” did? I don’t think Key and Lewis could accommodate two additional entire elementary feeders with its smaller capacity, and I don’t recall anything moving out of Lewis. I’m actually skeptical that they could accommodate all of Bren Mar Park. They’d have to move it up in the renovation queue.

Lewis could accommodate all of Bren Mar Park. I'm not sure that's the school some Lewis folks would pick to bolster the enrollment, and the School Board knows it wouldn't do much to change the FARMS rate at Lewis.

If they are moving an entire elementary school, it’s going to be WSES. It’s as clear as day.

The person who is insistent on this has argued it for months and says that the entirety of the HV boundary should be bussed to key and Lewis because they are out of walking zone to WSHS and Irving.

I am a HV parent and plan to move but I’m thinking SC.

But I also don’t trust or believe Reid and I’m sure she already has a plan and will do what she wants.

I actually believe it’s more that there are a few school board members (Sandy Anderson, St John Cunning, McDaniel) who want to stick it to certain schools. I’m thinking that Reid and other school board members are just negligent bystanders. Though Robyn Lady is likely looking to get a boost in her own property value.

I really believe that the SB member’s kids should all be required to move schools as part of this process. Since they don’t see any downside to the changes they should be fine with this.

You all need to relax and enjoy The Great Reset. It will be like medical students finding out where they have matched for their residencies. Some will get their first choices, others their second choices, and yet others still will end up somewhere they really didn't want to go. As Dr. Reid says, "Imagine the possibilities!"

Sandy Anderson is not looking to stick it to HV. If anything, she reassured the dozens of HV parents who contacted her after that fake news article published last Summer about HVES moving to Lewis. Her office created a statement to the effect of "Lewis is not the closest or second closest HS to HVES, and HVES is not the closest or second closest WSHS pyramid ES to Lewis, so it would not make sense to move it to Lewis."
