You really aren't making any sense. If you were arguing to move HV to South County or Keene Mill to Lewis, you might have credibility. But arguing that Hunt Valley should be moved past 5 other WSHS zoned elementary schools all the way to Lewis completely destroys any argument you have. |
This suggestion makes perfect sense. They should fire the consultant and hire you. |
Franklin Farm goes to Oak Hill, Lees Corner, Navy, and Crossfield. It's a massive neighborhood. There part that is FARTHEST AWAY from Navy in that neighborhood is the part that goes to Navy. It's so weird. |
I think some of this is "history." I'm not sure about the Lee's Corner part--it is possible that that section of Franklin Farm (I am just guessing) is part of Franklin Glen--which is across the parkway. The parkway was built AFTER Franklin Farm and Franklin Glen was built. As for the Navy part, I think I heard this story a long time ago from an original resident of Franklin Farm. Before Chantilly Highlands was built, Oak Hill Elementary membership was Franklin Farm. (Again, this was before the parkway was built.) After Chantilly Highlands was built, the school was overcrowded. Franklin Farm kids across the parkway were sent to Crossfield. Franklin Farm on Oak Hill side remains at Oak Hill. The section that goes to Navy complained and stayed at Oak Hill. Then, later, they were sent to Navy because Oak Hill was full. I've no idea why they were not sent to Crossfield. Maybe, it was overcrowded at that time. The Oak Hill boundary is almost entirely walkers--some are bused because of Franklin Farm RD. A good portion of the Navy part of Franklin Farm is adjacent to Thompson Rd which goes by Navy. West Ox by Navy was only two lanes in those days. And, I may be mistaken on this--remember, these neighborhoods were all built and mushroomed very quickly. There were tons of school aged children. |
Makes perfect sense. The farthest school from WSHS should move to Lewis . How does that not make sense. We need more kids at Lewis, not South County. Stop with this argument. |
Nope. They won’t send kids that walk to Irving or the only AAP center (for now). |
So the answer is to move another poor elementary school to Lewis??? |
The answer is to leave things alone and teach the kids. If they spent half the time they are spending on the boundary study on instruction, things might improve. |
Of course. They always want to consolidate the poors into a few schools. That is exactly how we got here now though. |
No. That is not how we got here. We got here because of changes in the communities. This happens over time. And, then communities can come back--without taking kids from other communities. "Start by making the school more attractive. Spending time and money on renaming was not helpful. Adding a social justice academy is not helpful. What would be helpful? Preparing the kids for the future by making them employable in good jobs. That comes from teaching them basic skills for starters and then encouraging them to reach higher. |
There is a lot of misinformation in this response. 1. There are parts of Chantilly Highlands that were built in the late 1970s. Franklin Farm was built in 1982-1985. Therefore, your statement about Franklin Farm being the population of Oak Hill until Chantilly Highlands was built doesn't make sense. Chantilly Highlands was finished after Franklin Farm, but it existed quite a while ago! 2. The Navy section of Franklin Farm is not at all adjacent to Thompson Road. The Navy section of Franklin Farm is off Nestlewood. The part of Franklin Farm that is adjacent to Thompson Road is off Tuckaway, and those kids go to Crossfield. 3. The statement about staying at Oak Hill vs going to Crossfield is bizarre. I went to Crossfield the year it opened (1988), and I had friends who lived off Tuckaway, Dower House, and Willow Glen. We all went to Crossfield and then Franklin and then Oakton. 4. Oak Hill has lots of buses, and their boundaries are not mostly walkers! For example, the kids who live in Emerald Chase and Bradley Farms are certainly not going to walk to Oak Hill. |
Well, you forgot uncontrolled immigration. And the fact that the last couple of times they moved students out of Lee/Lewis they took wealthier neighborhoods and moved them to other schools, particularly West Springfield. |
There was nothing wrong with renaming schools that were named after Confederate generals who fought to keep Black people enslaved. It simply wasn't a cure-all. |
+1 |
Complete BS. South County is under capacity by essentially the same percentage as Lewis, and since SCHS has a higher capacity, that is more seats. WSHS is supposedly overcrowded, so move HVES to next closest under capacity school, which is SCHS. Why in the world are you so obsessed with moving HV kids to a school that is further away?! |
