Why do tryouts for Fall sports start so ridiculously early?

Anonymous
It is so hot this week. Dangerously hot. Why are these kids back in school 2.5 weeks ahead of time. Do they start with games the first day of school? I don't remember this before. I thought Fall sports were for the Fall, not the last month and a half of summer.

Yes. Most seasons start the first week of September. In order to get thru tryout and everything it needs to start this week.

The County has guidelines due to the heat.

Temperature Guidelines

Heat Index Restrictions
0-90° F Normal practice guidelines and restrictions
91–104° F Exercise caution; observe players carefully; frequent water breaks;
limit time in which players are wearing full equipment
105° F + No outside activities; activities limited to air-conditioned school facilities

NP Do winter and spring sports have a month of tryouts and practices before they start games? When do winter and spring seasons start? They seem like they run so early.

No, they don't. They cannot start tryouts for winter and spring sports until the previous season has ended so there is an extremely short period between those seasons. Like a week.

But a lot of the winter and spring sports have summer and fall leagues (basketball, lacrosse, baseball, etc) and informal fall practices.

I'm curious, how does a student come to off-season practices if they weren't on the team the previous year? Whether they are a freshman or just didn't play the sport previously, can they just show up and participate?

That absolutely is not true. My daughter plays Spring and has never had leagues or informal practices for school. For some reason Fall sports get so much time for their try-outs, practices, and the other seasons do not. It will only get worse next year when everything shifts back one week early. Spring sports will have to begin in mid February (it started Feb 27th last year) and we all know what the weather is like then. Virginia does have this problem because they wait until after Labor Day to start school.

They need paper work including a physical performed by a Dr and at some schools they need to be submitted in advance..but if they have that then yes they can just participate in tryouts.

There are lacrosse leagues for Hs that many teams play in in the Fall and Winter. Since my DS played I can tell you it is true. WWrestling and Basketball havecsummer and fall clubs and leagues. It realy depends on the school and the coavh how much off season is done. Contact the coach snd they will put uou on an emsil lettting you knoe if any opportunities.

I love it when people say something is inaccurate for the whole county based on their one child...but anyways practice dates are set by the state so they will not change based on mcps s new start date.

I few facts that may help here.

MCPS sets their calendar.

MPSSAA sets the athletics calendar.

Sports used to start every year on August 15th. Same date every year.

Then MPSSAA changed it to start on a Saturday every year. This was done solely to accommodate football scheduling, but impacted all the other sports.

With the MD General Assembly passing a law a few years back that required new heat rules, fall sports lost most of their double sessions (two practices in one day).

One year after the heat rules changed practice schedules, MPSSAA passed another rule allowing coaches/schools to start three days earlier (without paying coaches) so now sports start on a Wednesday every year.

Next year that will be August 9th, in 2018 it will be August 8th and in 2019 it will back up a week to August 15th.

My daughter has 2 practices a day for cross country..

The other seasons have just as much time to tryout and practice before their first competition. It's just more noticeable for fall sports since it is 2 weeks before school

Two weeks is very normal. In fact, it is short compared to others districts.
