Why do tryouts for Fall sports start so ridiculously early?

This why starting school in August is such a bad idea.

NP Do winter and spring sports have a month of tryouts and practices before they start games? When do winter and spring seasons start? They seem like they run so early.

No, they don't. They cannot start tryouts for winter and spring sports until the previous season has ended so there is an extremely short period between those seasons. Like a week.

But a lot of the winter and spring sports have summer and fall leagues (basketball, lacrosse, baseball, etc) and informal fall practices.

I'm curious, how does a student come to off-season practices if they weren't on the team the previous year? Whether they are a freshman or just didn't play the sport previously, can they just show up and participate?

They need paper work including a physical performed by a Dr and at some schools they need to be submitted in advance..but if they have that then yes they can just participate in tryouts.

I know they can come to tryouts, but you mentioned that there are off-season practices. Would a student be able to just join in a practice without ever having been on the team? The coach is fine with anyone showing up to participate?

It depends on which sport. A football, basketball, or baseball coach is not going to look kindly at a kid who never showed up for one conditioning drill for the past nine months. On the other hand a cross country coach probably could care less because the bigger the team the more points they can score at meets. That's why cross country is called the "social sport".

Only the fastest runners score points for the team. Size does not mean more points.

Yep, it's RIDICULOUS.
And MCPS wants to start school even earlier.

It is not ridiculous. Plan your family vacation in June. That will help keep your kids away from beach week.

Next year if MCPS does start earlier, the state won't change anything and it will only be 12 days if a team starts on the first possible Wednesday.
Most non-football teams start a couple days later but it is not about official practices anyway. Many teams have conditioning and/or captain's practice
all summer.

All fall sports teams start on the same date.
