Former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to making a false statement in the first criminal case arising from U.S. Attorney John Durham’s review of the investigation into links between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign.

The inspector general accused Clinesmith, though not by name, of altering an email about former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page to say that he was “not a source” for another government agency.

Page has said he was a source for the CIA.

The Justice Department relied on Clinesmith’s assertion as it submitted a third and final renewal application in 2017 to eavesdrop on Page under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

During the plea hearing, Boasberg asked Clinesmith to affirm that he "intentionally altered an email, and added language" that "individual number one" was "not a source...and you knew that statement was in fact not true."

Clinesmith replied, "At the time I thought the information I was providing was accurate, but I am agreeing the information I inserted was not originally there, and I inserted the information."

It's amazing how the right wing thinks that Clinesmith somehow outweighs or negates the 34 criminal indictments that came out of the Mueller investigation - and everything that happened with Manafort, Gates, Bannon, Stone, etc...

It’s literally impossible to lose your law license once you’re in the guild. Seriously, you need to do something waaaay more egregious than lying to investigators. Not surprised at all that he will get to keep his license.

Nowhere near as sleazy as Giuliani who gave false testimony to various state legislators pushing his hyperbolic rhetoric of the Big Lie election steal. Nowhere near as sleazy as Manafort, Roger Stone, Steve Bannon and all the rest of Trump's circle, many of whom got their lives back via pardons. Nowhere near as sleazy as all of the other things that went on and which continue now with elections after Trump's goons got the ball rolling.

What Clinesmith did was at best irresponsible, sloppy shortcutting to avoid additional bureaucracy but either way it would and should not have altered the outcome of the investigations. Yet the GQP is so invested in a narrative of attacking him because they think that by attacking the single point of failure in the investigation, it somehow negates the entirety of the investigation - but it doesn't.

Like I care what Carter Page thinks. He was caught up as a result of other pre-existing FISA surveillance (Igor Sechin etc) and got some extra attention for being part of the Trump campaign but was then cleared. Hardly worth the hype.
