That would be a very plausible explanation—that she’s recovering from some complications. But why not just say that rather than that she is “working hard” and yet is leaving no trace?

This speculation is ridiculous. Isn't it rather obvious that she's hiding out from a cosmetic procedure? Do you really think a woman like Melania is going to go 4 or 8 years without having some "work" done? Lots of women hide out for a few weeks after getting plastic surgery.

Honestly, given who her husband is, the simplest assumption to make is too ghastly to mention. These "outlandish" assumptions, as you call them, are infinitely more charitable than the simplest assumption.

But that only works if you don’t ask why they don’t just say that. They could say that - like I said in the post your quoted, they could have just said she had complications and needed to rest and people would have wished her well. Why didn’t she go to Camp David? Tiffany went.
