Yep. You can’t physically make him responsive. Although a taped sworn deposition would be great. None of the air time and all of the perjury! |
Let's just say he knowingly went to work for someone who was a loose cannon, but when it mattered most, he did the right thing. I don't think anyone working at the White House ever thought their own lives could be endangered by crossing the President. They were fine with putting OTHER people's lives in danger, during various protests from the left and right. They were fine with implementing policies that ultimately kill people, such as deregulating polluting industries, cutting back on low-income aid, trying to cancel the ACA... but when Pence was under maximum pressure and his life was in danger, he did the right thing. Sure, he considered how history would view him. His own long-term interests were aligned with resisting Trump's request. But in the short-term, he risked his life. That has to count for something, people. |
Has he done the right thing?
Has he said the election wasn’t stolen? That it was free and fair? I’m seriously asking. I can’t remember what he has or hasn’t said. From my perspective he said he couldn’t do what Trump wanted him to do because the rules didn’t allow it. Not because it was wrong. Not because he didn’t agree with it. In retrospect he was in mortal danger, but I don’t think he realized it. I believe in his heart he knows what is right, but his actions have fallen way short of what this moment demands. Meeting the moment would have meant coming out loud and publicly stating the election was not fraudulent. There was no basis to contest it, and Trump’s actions were anti democratic. He should have spoken about it that night. Instead he acted helpless. Like it was just too bad he couldn’t do what Trump asked. |
So if Trump finally acknowledged that he lost and lost big and admitted the riot was incited by him and he apologized and would take his punishment for treason, we which is a firing squad. Well, you might consider him a hero, but by jingo, I would volunteer to be a member of the firing squad and I have never held a gun. Finally telling the truth and performing your constitutional duty in no way makes anyone a hero. If Pence had told Trump "NO" from the beginning I would credit him with a heroic act but he didn't. He was told repeatedly by his legal advisors that he could not do as trump demanded and he calls Dan Quayle for advice!!!!! This is the antithesis of heroism. |
+1 and he also hasn’t testified. |
There are currently two threads at the top of the forum bemoaning how the Democrats suck. It’s insane that the exact same stupid arguments about the Democrats bubble up like air bubbles in a sewage line, but no one ever expects the GOP to moderate or and no one expects GOP voters to be sensible. It’s never asked. There’s just a “both sides.” Meanwhile the GOP is safely the maga party, no further reflection needed. |
You make good points, but the bar is so low, PP. Today the Texas GOP voted to proclaim that the 2020 election was fraudulent. I mean... it's depressing. How can we reach such people? By comparison, any Republican willing to oppose election fraud, willing to impeach Trump and willing to work with Democrats on guns is veritable saint. Another Republicans, can't remember who, said yesterday that people with shotguns should hunt RINOs, and specified he didn't mean rhinoceroses. And this kind of inflamed, completely weird rhetoric isn't just happening in the US. It's happening elsewhere, in France during this year's Presidential campaign, and elsewhere. Collectively it seems the world has gone round the bend. What's the solution here? |
I agree. I don’t agree with many of his positions and his cynical use of religion to curry favor with white evangelicals on the political stage is sickening. I resented the way he went along with every immoral thing Trump did as if making abortion a wedge issue made him an upright president (have to wonder how many abortions Trump has financed for his many indiscretions). All those MAGA rallies where Trump incoherently but charismatically exhorted his cult followers to violence and hatred in the name of loving America while Pence indulged his every psychotic petty grievance. I truly resented Pence’s contribution to the degradation of American democracy and public discourse - lending a veneer of respectable morality to an amoral, ruthless, undisciplined, dishonest and depraved president. However, I truly have respect for the way he carried himself on Jan 6, 2020. I agree he did the right thing when it mattered most. He has navigated very tricky waters for Republicans since then and he is still in great danger since that mad man he served continues to blame him for not illegally reversing a legal and legitimate election. I agree he deserves credit for following the law at great personal and professional cost to himself. |
It is beyond comprehension that you think Pence deserved admiration for doing his duty and only after Dan Quale told him he had no choice. I never thought I would ever think of Dan Quale as a hero but he the heroic one, not Pence. Pence was turning over every rock to see if could do Trump's dirty work.
The MAGA deplorables will reject him enmasse. |
+1 It’s cute to see him get his face eaten by leopards though. (PS, Republicans: that’s a metaphor based on the meme of people supporting the leopards eating faces party being surprised that the leopards eventually eat their face. It’s not meant to be taken literally as I do not want Pence’s actual face to get eaten off, nor do I think this has literally happened). |
I can’t watch this hearing live so I would love hot takes from y’all as the hearing progresses. |
Get ready for Trump’s “gifts” aka bribes, lies, and accusations of election fraud in communities with ~ 40% black population. Trump is a racist SOB who blatantly incited white supremacists to come out from the underworld with their confederate flags to terrorize he capital and our country. |
