Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

This does not make sense. Why would those central Oakton families moved out of Oakton to Fairfax, while Greenbair East moved from Fairfax to Oakton? If capacity is an issue, why not move those further west on Rt 50, West Ox or 286 out of Oskton?

You need to read the preceding posts. Lees Corner was included in the Coates Study. It is not very near Coates. Someone replied that it was "mighty close to Westfield" which is far from true. Lee's Corner is actually less than 1 mile from Chantilly and not "mighty close to Westfield." Some of it's students live one block from Chantilly High. I know we are discussing Coates, but this has ramifications for the large upcoming boundary shift. |

Moving the entirety of Waples Mill from Oakton HS to Fairfax HS is a bold move and will definitely meet resistance from parents. Waples Mill is in Oakton, as is most of its catchment area. It is reasonable for Oakton families to want to send their kids to Oakton HS. As a Waples Mill family, agree 100% |
Are Lee’s Corner kids zoned for walking? If not, they are on a bus and that bus can just as quickly go to Westfield. |
Yes, because 20 minutes is the same as 2 minutes. |
Ridiculous. Waples Mill and Navy should stay at Oakton. What they should do is move the Franklin Farm people to South Lakes. Makes no sense. |
| I feel so sorry for all of you twisting in the wind. This School Board is dominated by idiots who ignore facts and aren't moved by logic. They will cram whatever boundary changes they want down your throats and leave you to fume. If I were at schools like Forestville or Wakefield Forest, I'd sell now while you can still get out. |
Please everyone stop opining on other areas if you can't be bothered to read a map. Lees Corner is nowhere near Westfield. Those kids can walk to Chantilly and Franklin. And you want to move them to Stobe/Westfield? Its not logical. |
Not an Oakton parent. Why do they want a fruit basket turnover. Leave it alone. People want to stay where they are. Do you really think paying a contractor to do this will result in a good solution? 1. Minimal grandfathering means you will have kids moving schools where the languages taught may be different. Sequence of classes offered may not work. IB vs AP, etc. 2. You will be splitting up families. Believe me, this is not easy and you will have LOTS of angry parents. 3. You will be splitting school communities that have formed over the years. 4. You think sports at Hayfield were a problem? Just wait until you have parents screaming that their current basketweaving coach was great--but the one at the new school assigned is awful. 5. The bus routes are confusing enough with the status quo--just wait until you take people out of the community they are already in. Sure, they say you will go to the closest school--but it is unlikely that they won't mess up badly. This is just off the top of my head. There are reasons people want to stay put and they are good reasons. |
| There are a lot of new condo/TH housing developments zoned for Westfield being built-by Wegmans, by Target, and over by the Sully community center. Westfield is already over 2800 kids. |
The first link here does not work. What was it? |
I think the poster just wanted to point people to the third page of the second link, which does work and shows the SPAs (school planning areas) for schools in the Coates study. - DP |
Navy Tiger Mom alert!! FCPS really needs to fix the Navy / Crossfield border situation. Anything west of West Ox should go to Navy/Franklin/Chantilly, anything east of West Ox should go to Crossfield/Carson/Oakton. Think about proximity, momma!!! |

Just watched some of the school board meeting. Had a laugh when Meren said that the projections in the CIP are on target 100-105% of the time.
What a clown show. None of them are serious people. |
