Why weren't they with MLS Next to begin with?

Only our RL players go to MLS1. Just look at Surf College Cup last weekend. Most MLS1 teams are at the bottom of the group.

This happened at the Copa Rayados Internacional in Houston last week as well. Poor performance by MLSN teams. Got beaten consistently by ECNL RL teams.

Maybe they were feeling down, thinking the entire platform would have to switch to SY. Now, watch out!

Losers always try to find an excuse, no exception.

This year they're fine with NAL becoming MLSN2

Next year they're going to run to ECNL because MLSN2 is still MLSN2 with the same age cutoff as ECNL

Is that the working theory?

That’s the theory for August-December birthdays. This year, a u15 Aug-dec birthday is eligible for u15 mls1 or u15 mls2 team. Many stay for the hope of being moved from 2 to 1.

Next year, those birthdays will be eligible for u16 mls1 or u15 mls2. If they don’t make the mls1 team there is no hope of being moved up in the future because they are now playing an age group below.

Moving up is based on individual skills, talent and potential

No labels move you up or keep you back if the coaches see your individual quality, or lack thereof

That’s works for u15 B team to u15 A team. Moving from a u15 B team to a u16 A team is almost impossible.

You can go from NCSL to New York Red Bulls academy if you have the quality

If you're a solid B team player who isn't doing enough to elevate your skills then wishing to be moved up just because you're in line is waiting for fools gold

Entitlement curse

Prior to this change they didn’t have to skip an age group to move up. They just had to move from a lower level team to a higher level team. Now they need to skip an age group to move from a lower level team to a higher level team. That’s a concerning position.

Isn't everyone in the same age group with people their age when the dust settles?

It's about talent groups not age groups at the highest levels
Everyone gets a medal and trophy days are done

Yes once they are adults, we’re talking about kids and how the system is affecting development and chances to reach that “higher” level

The age cutoff isn't the reason kids are on 2nd and 3rd teams today
It won't be the reason tomorrow

The majority of development responsibilities for youth is on the kids and parents
The system has its faults, but it's not responsible

Partly agree. If kids are not putting in the work it’s going to be rare with age change to go up from team 2 to 1.

But a kid who’s mid pack or bottom of their current top team with Aug to Dec bday will definitely move up one notch.

Just my life example but I watch the 2011s practice with my kids 2012 team during high school season they are all sub level players mostly and all 5 would be starters and arguably best players on my kids team.

To think no shake up is coming would be arrogant and ignorant.

For boys nothing will change other than some boys will leave for MLSN to ECNL but also some ECNL kids will leave for MLSN it will all even out.

ECNL will become the preferred landing spot altogether as they allow HS soccer in top of it too.MLSN2 will become an absolute joke as it will have absolutely no connection to a pro pathway. Would not be shocked if MLSN folds in a few years.

Seems like MLSN2 and ECNL are the same thing to me.

Lots of homers commenting on this thread.

If you're talking about College only MLSN2 would have more connections than ECNL with college coaches from MLSN1 interactions with the Club DOC.

Totally different level of colleges targeting mlsn1 vs 2.
MLS2 has only been playing for a few months. Not sure they've been found to target yet.

HS exp cannot be replaced. ECNL has both. The top scorer of a top MLS1 team just quit, in order to play our HS in his senior year. Now MLS2 is officially a money grab.

Exactly, MLSN2 or MLS Next Academy is a scam, useless.

MLS2 is a dead end and will fold soon. Actually it should never get started in 2025.

Ok, ECNL hat

ECNL hats come with a 20k per year payment plan.

Enjoy.

Did you know that in-state schools won’t offer your kid a full ride no matter what?

You're missing the bigger picture and why there are a bunch of MLSN haters here, although there are certainly legit complaints/concerns and MLSN will be under the gun to make it all work. MLSN/GA is in a competitive battle with ECNL for the top end of Youth Soccer. MLSN2 isn't just 2nd teams. There were a bunch of solid USYS clubs who picked that vs. ECNL or ECRL. Many of those clubs are geared toward HS, so in that context, the decision for them to go SY makes a ton of sense. Those clubs don't necessarily do better under the ECNL system, especially while the other leagues fragment even more.

Not having an upward path for 1st and 2nd teams for clubs with both Mlsn is ridiculous plain and simple. Almost zero upward mobility puts clubs parents and kids in a bind and forces an alternative, heretofore ECNL

MLS2 only club just got screwed. It will be much harder for them to sell the pathway to MLS1 if their club can ever be promoted to it. You are talking about $25K a year with everything and parents are not stupid.

Yeah, go for all that upward mobility that exists -- wait, what? When has that ever really happened? Not much. Instead, you have a history of legacy clubs gate keep. Even with expansion, I haven't seen much of a difference.
