I think we're talking about two different things here:
1. Can your club juggle players from team to team BEFORE a tournament starts? Sure. 2. Can the same player play for multiple teams in one tournament? Usually, no. |
It's generally referred to as a club pass - you have 36 or so kids in an age group with two teams as an example, and you can move them between rosters as you want. This is one of the foundational principles of CCL. However...each player does need to be on an 'official' roster - either US Club or USYS. That's what you show for a tournament. Most tournaments have rules that limit guest players to a certain number (usually about 4 or 5), and also rules that restrict one player being on multiple teams in a tournament. Then there's State Cup, which has a 'Frozen' roster at the start of the competition that carries through the final. Clear as mud now? |
Not CCL guy. What are your thoughts on CCL winning 8 out of 10 VA State Cup titles? Are other non-CCL teams participating in this competition? I know missing DA teams.

There are a lot fewer teams this year. VPL teams are not playing, US Club soccer is running it's own version of the VA State Cup this year. |
Yes. I am a PP. The point is that most tournaments prohibit a player from playing for more than 1 team in the same AG in a tournament. When you roster kids for the tournament, it isn't a problem to shuffle the teams but Larlo can't be rostered for teams A and B in the tournament and play for both those teams in the same tournament. |
Yes VPL is missing but that "State Cup" is mainly going to be VPL teams only. Other teams in NCSL would likely rather participate in VYSA's Cup since it's run by US Youth Soccer and not Club Soccer. Do you think other teams have given up on participating since the last two editions of the competitions have been mainly won by CCL? Is it the price? Is it the distance to other parts in VA? It seems that the competition is mostly dominated by teams in the Northern Region of the State. |
Just took a look and most age groups have over 20 teams participating so it doesn't seem that it's low participation. Lower participation on the girls side but still plenty of teams. |
Looks like CCL is doing something well as being a good option outside of the DA. Any word on expansion for CCL to other clubs? |
It seems to me that the overwhelming majority of the State Cup champions came from the same clubs that were consistently producing State Cup champions long before CCL started. What reason is there to think the league made any difference in the outcomes? |
I'm a CCL parent and regardless what you think about the league, the teams are competitive. Whenever we participate in tournaments, we know the CCL teams will be solid competition. That's not to say we don't see some really good teams from other clubs. State cup is like any other tournament, you go on a streak and you can anyone can win. It has been pretty consistent that CCL will go deep at almost all age groups. |
5 of the 8 state cup winners are either Loudoun or Arlington, two of the best clubs in the state no matter where they play. They could go play in VPL next year and would still be as good as they are today, CCL doesn't matter. |
|
Well league does matter somewhat in order to continue to push these bigger clubs to remain at the top. If the competition within the league was not strong these teams would not be ready to continue to play at a high level. From the results, they are not blowing anybody out but are still the stronger teams withing their brackets. |
What came first CCL or VPL? |
NPL is from US Club soccer and came first throughout the nation, a few clubs pulled out from CCL and started a Virginia NPL, and called it VPL. VCCL came first, and CCL, then entirely separate VPL. |
