Yes! To me, the incident with stealing the poster is completely irrelevant. NK can use whatever they feel like against Americans, which is why Americans should never travel there. I am sure NK used him to make an example to the NK for whatever twisted propaganda they have going on.

NP. This. Does anyone remember Michael Fay, the American kid who got caned and sent to jail in Singapore for vandalism in 1994? As an American, I'd probably take caning over time in a jail in Singapore, personally. Pay attention to travel warnings, people.

Fay was charged with stealing road signs and vandalizing cars in Singapore, although he said he didn't do the latter. I wasn't aware drugs were part of that case?

According to the Post article today, he was traveling in China. A tour group was advertising a 4-5 night adventure in NK over New Year's and he decided to give it a try. His room mate on the trip has spoken out but not the tour's managers.

No one has said the consequences are on Obama. Please show me where Obama has been blamed for what happened to Otto. People are upset that Obama made no efforts to bring him back home after the show trial and even told the parents to keep a low profile. Obama was into appeasement, apparently. BTW, the parents followed Obama's directives to a T. Of course they were relieved when a new administration came into power that wanted to help them. Wouldn't you be?

I am so sorry for Otto's family. Otto's lost his life because he made a decision to visit North Korea. It must have seemed like an adventure to him, but most likely he was chosen to be made an example of to punish the USA for some reason. I saw the video, and there was no way to identify the student. It may have been a fake.

Horrible situation. God only knows what he suffered while in North Korean custody. There should be US repercussions, but there are other US hostages in North Korea, so we have to protect them from suffering the same fate.

Yes, the lesson is, do not travel to North Korea!!!!!!!

But it's too late for Otto and his family. They have my sympathies.

Another reason cutting the State Department budget is a bad idea. Tillerson is in way over his head when it comes to North Korea. He needs help from experts in this area.

I was responding to another poster who took note of the fact that people seem more concerned when a crime is committed by non-whites, and that got the entire discussion rolling.
