DP. Okay, so rural folks should have to drive an hour to a hospital? Fine.

White MAGA men are NOT studying science. They are eschewing colleges because Trump and co are vilifying them. When Trump tells his base it's patriotic to study math and science, then you will have a case.

Rural white men don’t have access to quality education so of course they don’t pursue academics.

the idea that rural white men are enduring some kind of special suffering and discrimination right now is beyond ludicrous.

OMFG. Rural white men and women are why this country is falling apart. Tons of people have REALLY challenging lives and don't turn to hatred and bigotry. Buh bye.

+1 They feel they are entitled to stay put and just reap all sorts of benefits because they are who they are. It's called study hard and go away to a good school like the rest of us. You don't get special treatment because you're stubborn and entitled.

Yup. Remember when Hillary was trying to create job training in coal mining country. There was one dad who refused to entertain that his kid would learn car computer engineering to take a job in Detroit because he'd have to move away from home in Appalachia. So, he guilted his son until he took a coal mining job like dad.

The "stick your neck out is bad" philosophy in many poor, rural cultures is a huge, unaddressed issue. Immigrants work hard, and will move. A lot of MAGA don't like their kind trying to get ahead.

This. The MAGAs in my family are the ones who didn't take risks and pick up and move. They were told NOT go away to college (oh my god, you'll turn into a hippie!!!) so they stayed close to home and took low-level manual labor-type jobs. They never lived on their own, never paid rent for the own apartment, just lived at home until they got married, then moved-- but not too far away, and only to places that were familiar to their parents.

Now they're all MAGA, angry at everyone but themselves, mocking their "pompous" cousins who did finish college and move out of the old neighborhood for white collar jobs (and their kids all did extremely well in life as a result). That's the little secret with MAGA-- they're scared of change and taking risk and get pissy when they realize others stepped up, took risks, didn't fear change, and reaped rewards for it. It's ultimately about control and making sure your kids don't change and become someone you can no longer control-- and god forbid they do change? "Huh, you think you're better than us, going to that Commie school that turned you into someone else who doesn't go to church. We should never have let you go in the first place, look at you all hoity toity now, just watch, you'll slip and fall and need us and Jesus again. Ha!!"

You don’t seem to understand that not everyone acts the same as your own family. People migrate or not due to many many reasons that you are not able to deduce from the top of your mind. Try to humble yourself because nothing is worse than a person who escaped poverty but then looks down on those who were not so fortunate.

BTW you do seem elitist and so if your old family and friends from before your move are giving you those comments or vibes then they are actually being pretty astute and accurately labeling your attitude as “better than”. It’s obvious.

Don’t be like JD Vance.

It’s not about escaping poverty, it’s about holding yourself and even your own
kids back and then trying to blame minorities and immigrants— just like my MAGA relatives do. No one told them to drop out of college, no one stopped them from applying for better jobs, no one stopped them from moving to a lower cost of living city with new opportunities. They were their own worst enemies and now pull the “woe is me I’m a white Christian male so I deserve all the breaks in the world” crap.

Turn back in your armchair psychology degree. Your entire post is a waste of space that doesn't apply to PP.

First, PP just relays their family experience. That's it. They never say in their post anywhere that everyone who is MAGA is like this. You don't get to call them a liar or project your own BS onto their very straightforward post.

Second, if you go home and your relatives mock you and belittle your achievements, that's hurtful. This PP can feel any way about these jerks that he/she want. The DO sound like a bunch of losers who are butthurt and envious.

What is wrong with YOU that you are posting such nonsense to make YOURSELF feel all high and mighty. Your post is a fail.

Pure ignorance. People who aren’t well off financially and don’t have advanced degrees are always going to be more prone to depression and anger and to taking their anger out of groups of “others.” Don’t believe me? Ask an educated gay person in Africa how they’re treated by uneducated people in rural areas.

Stop excusing someone being a complete horrible, hateful jerk on being poor and educated.

How does THEIR ignorance justify the vileness of their behavior? There are tons of people who are poor and uneducated who don't do the things the MAGA movement does. In 2016, many of us excused their error in voting for Trump. Looked to understand such a gross error in judgement. Now, nope. These people have proven themselves to be the worst of the worst of humanity. Harm others to make yourself feel better? Cheer human rights violations against immigrants and others? Nope. Nope. Nope.

MAGA are all the worst humanity has to offer and their are NO excuses for how deplorable, yes, deplorable, they are at this time. If you are MAGA after Trump's first term, something is horribly, horribly broken in you.

I agree. The comment was directed at the pp who was suggesting that people who escaped from poverty shouldn’t look down on the impoverished — which is JD’s entire being, his MO.

Anonymous wrote:Anyone feel this way? I am struggling really hard to identify ways in which my life has gotten better in the US over the last 25 years. Everything just feels like it has gotten infinitely worse in my lifetime.

Healthcare is an absolute joke and trash in the US. Premiums skyrocket while the quality of sevice seems to constantly circle the proverbial toilet. Trying to find a PCP is a maddening experience. Then dealing with insurance companies trying to weasel out of paying for a procedure or who incessantly refuse to pay for drugs prescribed....totally exhausting.

Roads, tunnels, bridges, and infrastructure falling apart everywhere. We are supposed to be first world country, yet it takes months to fix a simple pothole, and people in Flint Michigan don't even have potable water.

Constant and oppressive gun violence. It is so bad mass shootings barely crack the national media these days, because they're just routine life in America.

Insurance rates for everything else exploding. Astronomical housing costs. Out of control food prices. Unaffordable education and childcare. $52,000 "family cars". Just absurd.

Meanwhile, US is embroiled in yet another forever war costing $3B/day. We don't have money to help our citizens afford healthcare premiums yet we have infinite dollars for shooting drones down 8000 miles away. Now out country's reputation on the world stage is utter trash and in the dumpster. We are the bad guys in billions of peoples' eyes. And we continue to blow up our national debt that's going to be so bad soon that the costs to simply service our debt will eat huge amounts of our budget for future generations. Oh, and social security? Ha, good luck expecting to benefit from it in the future. They're gonna make us work until 79 before we are allowed to tap benefits.

And finally, everything seems to be ensh*ttified (ES) or on its way to being ES. Our corporate overlords now tell us we aren't allowed to own anything. Oh, you want to use the heat in your car? Pay a subscription. Oh, you want to buy a phone? Sign all of your privacy away. Buy a fridge, dryer, or washer? ES now. Can't access their features unless ypu connect it to the internet and agree to have your home streamed with infinite ads on the main screen.

Jobs? So unstable these days. Oh you want a new job? That'll take 879 applications to get an interview. Every app requiring the use of AI to get around AI screeners. Every app asking for a resume but then asking on the next screen questions that are answerable with information from your resume and they want you to type it out all over again.

Ughh, the US is just broken. Has anyone's life gotten better over the last two decades? I'm just exhausted and done. The entire country feels like a gigantic scam and hustle that benefits the few while those of us simply wanting to live a simple life are destroyed.

End rant.

What a whiner.

Actually no. Many things are much nicer and work!! in other countries.

But as to OP’s point, yes. America is falling apart. Biden was doing a good job focusing on doing things to improve the lives of Americans, including healthcare, manufacturing, infrastructure. But no. MAGA wanted to focus on boys on softball teams and here we are. At the hands of a demented dying man who is determined to kill us all. ETTD.

STFU. When Biden wasn’t napping, he was encouraging millions of illegals to come in & do whatever they wanted.

I hear this often -- "OMG! The illegals were coming in and draining resources. Oh no!"

I'd love to see how much Trump has hurt our economy with tariffs, war in Iran, massive deficits. How much Trump has hurt our standing with our allies by basically saying "eff you" to anyone who doesn't follow his every command. How many people around the world have died because Trump cut USAID and now death and disease are running rampant. How much has Trump hurt our science and research and development because he slashed those government funds. Sheesh, we just sent astronauts on a historic mission and now Trump wants to cut NASA by 24%.

Honestly, the whole anger thing regarding illegals feels like a massive misdirection so people don't notice what's really going wrong. Don't focus on our rising gas prices or hospitals having to close; no, you should give in to your racist impulses and hate those refugees. You should hate those trans. You should hate all Dems. Just hate, and you won't even notice that you can't afford your treatment for cancer, or even get a doctor. Don't worry about all that. Just keep hating.

As anyone that has a brain knows, it is about cheap labor. Here is Iowa State, an institution dedicated to training our children, unable to train a business analyst???

and Democrats are suing the federal government to keep H-1B. because as the party of labor, they are dedicated to replacing our own workers with cheap temporary labor. (https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/12/politics/h-1b-visa-fee-lawsuit)

Iowa State University has posted a notice of intent to hire an H-1B Business Systems Analyst

Salary: $86,778

Nobody in Iowa was qualified for this job.

Colleges charge 80k+ a year but yet they want to hire foreign educators. How does this make sense? Why do we accept the high cost of education while our companies crater job opportunities and hand them to foreigners??

This is the crap that got Trump elected

And democrats still push for more h1bs

Wait, you think it is democrats hiring these h1b's?

yes

it is democrats that are suing federal government to keep H1B visas for universities.

A coalition of blue states is suing the federal government over its fee of $100,000 for H-1B Visas, several Democratic attorneys general announced on Friday.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/12/politics/h-1b-visa-fee-lawsuit

we are broken when the party of labor sues to allow universities to replace US workers with cheap temporary labor. because universities could not find "skilled" labor.

when will democrats wake up and stop being mini me republicans?

this is the cause of Democrats losing

where are the H1B apologists claiming H1B is about skilled labor????????

This morning the University of Pittsburgh posted a notice of intent to hire two new H-1B workers

Software Engineer - $75,130 / year
Senior Data Analyst - $83,929 / year

Nobody in Pennsylvania was qualified for these jobs.

Normally, when organizations do this, it's because they have a specific person in mind. It could be someone who is offshore with institutional knowledge (contractor or FTE), and they want to bring that person onshore.

This is not a liberal vs conservative thing. Oracle, owned by a MAGA, laid off thousands of people, all while applying for thousands of H1s.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/new-updates/oracle-layoffs-update-amid-thousands-of-job-cuts-us-it-firms-big-move-triggers-massive-backlash-online/articleshow/129994820.cms?from=mdr

And then let's not forgot Musk's use of H1s. Trump courts these tech bros. You know that his administration is approving all of their apps for H1s.

Anthropic AI will be happy to do the job.

Aren’t you the benevolent one?

Not for US citizens. For foreigners

That is why we are broken

foreigners are willing to go to podunk red areas and serve the communities there because "real Americans" want to be in cities. Without those foriegners getting AMA grants, most of the rural, red state hospitals would be operating without doctors.

There is wholesale discrimination against Americans, especially white men, and you say we need foreigners? The nerve!

Buh bye.

What does benevolence have to do with staying a simple and obvious fact. It’s the truth. Voting for Trump is one of the gravest errors in judgment any American has ever made in the voting booth.

Ben & Jerry's co-founder Ben Cohen has stated that the U.S. is not a democracy but a "dollarocracy," where political donations from corporations and wealthy donors dictate election outcomes and policy over the will of the people. He argues that members of Congress represent money rather than citizens, often using the phrase "one dollar, one vote" to describe the system
