Except MCPS often takes cues from its surrounding districts. Most schools are opening. MCPS should too |
Why do you think the snow needs to melt to open schools? People have been walking on sidewalks all week. Kids out playing. Adults walking dogs or going to work. Is there zero risk? Of course not. But as you pointed out. there isn't zero risk without snow. Vehicle and pedestrians happen, often at higher and more dangerous speeds, without snow. People slip and fall even without snow. The increased risks here are minimal. The snow is mostly an inconvenience because it will slow people down. |
| The problem is everyone feels they are done with the school year after AP exams in HS are done, or after state mandated tests have been administered in ES, MS, and HS in the spring. Can't push back those test dates. If they could, make up this one week or more of missed instruction and make up the testing in June. |
I think, where there's not really any change in the weather forecast, *any* information about area schools is relevant. |
This is really pathetic thinking of you. People like you (your lack of comprehension (I did not say I was not coming in) and your lack of empathy for others in a different situation than yourself) are the reasons I hate teaching. |
Frederick was already open on Friday and they got about the same as us. |
| Can someone cut to the chase here and answer the question as of Sunday 2:15 pm? |
They said before 4pm… so we’ll know soon |
Where is your empathy for the kids who have already missed 4 days of school? If you care about their education, why aren't you at least calling for real make-up days instead a repeat of last year? |
|
2-hour delay would allow everyone to travel to school in full sunlight and would also allow rush hour to be spread out because travel tomorrow is going to be a total gong show. Maybe the people without kids or who aren't doing childcare can get to work and be off the roads by the time it all hits the fan.
This stuff isn't going anywhere for awhile. We're going to need days of sustained temperatures above freezing to make a significant dent in these mounds and that's not happening for awhile. A few hours a day at 33-35 is not going to do it. We're just going to have to accept that it's going to be challenging, be flexible with tardies/absences, and do the best we can. |
The general expectation here seems to be sticking with a delay. |
They said they will announce by 4pm Sunday today |
It will get worse before it gets better. Higher daytime temperatures mean streets and sidewalks will be covered in *real* ice in the morning. |
We may be in for multiple delay start days. I’m okay with that as long as my kid gets in their core classes |
|
I think closed again. Too many streets near schools are inaccessible for a high volume of vehicles all at once because the lanes have been narrowed by unplowed ice. I imagine traffic will be very bad on major roads like University, Viers Mill, NH, etc that are adjacent to schools. There would be lines of cars and school buses going back blocks. God forbid anyone has a fender bender or breakdown.
My school specifically needs a cat to come out and turn the single lane into two. |
