How many of those 99.9999% of cases are perpetrated by rich, white ladies? (Or even just ladies?) It’s the incredibly unusual circumstances here that would seem to make it newsworthy. The media LOVES to expose the misdeeds of rich, white people.

There has been a story on the Charlottesville CBS website and an article on the RTD website from another source. This has not been mentioned on any local Richmond tv stations at all. It is surprising because the family has strong Richmond connections, there are not many female child predators and generally white female predators DO make the news. Think of all the stories of the white female teachers having sexual relationships with high school students.

Also, no Wash Post, WTOP, etc. These outlets report tons of stories out of Charlottesville.

I do find this unusual.

White mom suburban housewife arrested for child porn and attempted sexual exploitation pretty much screams news headline, and definitely above the local level!

Plus, tons of visuals of her all over the place so it’s a pretty easy story to tell. Go to Warrenton and do your standup in front of the motel.

Not really. Do you know how many terrible things actually happen to children every day, up to and including torture and murder? This is an extremely salacious story but no actual children were harmed. It’s main interest is local. At most you can expect coverage from the yellow press like NY Post and possibly some kind of C list Dateline show.

I have worked in both local and network news. Salacious sells, heartwarming not so much.

And yes, stories do get suppressed. People to you what to cover and you do it. Not too many choices made at the lower level.

Nobody is covering this up at WaPo or CNN. The bottom feeders that profit of this kind of crime (Daily Mail, NY Post) will cover it.

If reputable news sources like WAPO and CNN don't report this kind of crime, how would people learn about it? You are indicating that reporting it to the public is only for "bottom feeders."

why do you need to learn about this kind of crime though? it’s not news. it’s news in Richmond and that’s it.

She traveled to Northern Virginia to commit the crime and is being charged in DC. Definitely a local connection.

He’s a magistrate and no he cannot.
The truth is that we have basically no local news in most cities nowadays. Someone posted saying the Richmond newspaper is hardly limping along with a skeleton staff. The local news we do have largely is like a social page that sells stuff like home design by profiling rich people, so no real incentive to muckrake there.
I feel bad for the ex because in another career, he could change his name and move towns to protect the kids from all the gosslp. That’s hard for someone in his position to do. I think if I were him I would probably change the kids last name to their step mom’s name, and maybe look for a position with a law firm in someplace like Denver or Portland, if those states have bar reciprocity.

Why denver or Portland?

They are decent legal markets, far away from the Richmond social scene (I wouldn’t go to Atlanta or DC, for instance). San Diego is another option. Mid sized markets where his credentials will get him a decent job and they can start over. But if he or his new wife have a lot of Richmond connections they might not want to leave all that behind.

Interesting that you only want to know about crimes in the town/city in which you reside.

I think we need to know about this kind of crime because people need to be aware that depravity like this exists in the world so that we can all better protect our kids and kids in our community from it. I think a lot of people are truly not aware that there are people like EH out there in the world, people who don’t think twice about sending their kids to a friend’s house for a play date or sleepover, people who would never suspect that someone like EH would do something like this, people who would never think to be aware of their surroundings or identify someone who appears UMC and who is a parent as a predator. Of course having a sex predator who fits her profile is statistically rare but I know for me this case will make me even more vigilant than I already am about people who prey on kids and ultimately I think that’s a good thing because it’ll help me better protect my own kids or even potentially other kids in my orbit.

That was my thought. The family are well-connected lawyers, a lawsuit would be inevitable. Doesn't make it right, but still.

On what grounds would they be able to sue?

Why are you going to such great lengths to justify the lack of press coverage? Northern Virginia is not incorporated so what is and what is not NOVA is up for debate. Plenty of people consider parts of Fauquier county Northern Virginia.

It is unlikely she would have come into contact with any of the children receiving services.

Her husband being on the board would not have put her in contact with kids, unlike working as a victim's advocate or say, volunteering at her children's school.

So this doesn’t need to be in the news because it didn’t happen in your county? I don’t get your logic. I frequently read international, national, and regional news. Not just news of things that happen in my town. It’s not like oh ok we’re safe from this type of thing happening because it occurred 100 miles from where we live…could never happen here! /s
