| My car was parked at the end of my driveway yesterday at 2:00 in the afternoon a person in my neighborhood leaves the road and hit my car I would say about $2000.00 in damage no injuries. Police come, I did not call, stated they would file an accident report and issue a citation for distracted driving. I feel this guy does have insurance. Who’s insurance company should I contact? |
| You feel this guy has insurance? Surely the police required him to produce his insurance at the scene? Or you asked for his insurance info? In any event just call your insurance co and ask them. Usually you go through your company and they get the money back from his company. |
| You contact your's, and the cops probably had y'all swap information so you should have his insurance information. |
| Do you have his insurance info? It's a crime if he didn't give it to you? His insurance should pay for the damage. |
| File a claim with your insurance company. They will work it with his insurance company. |
I personally woudlnt get my insurance involved at all. Why? It will count as a claim. I just had someone Horne from behind. I called the person's insurance and dealt with it. I didn't want my insurance involved at all. |
I disagree - I have USAA and was hit by a truck yesterday. I was stopped and the truck backed out of a spot behind me and the rear of my car. I am not at fault and going through USAA is easy for me. I trust their approved shops and know that I am not going to get the run around. For me time is the most constrained element in my life and USAA and their approved locations will work on my time. |
I'm really surprised your insurance company is agreeing to pay for an accident where you were not at fault. That is not how insurance companies work. |
| OP here yes we did exchange information, and he had a valid insurance card so my comment I feel he has insurance, unless he was cancelled for some reason. Main reason I would prefer not to involve my insurance company if not necessary. |
Another USAA client here. Love, love, love USAA! This is how they work. They will pay and later deal with the other insurance company. I have been with USAA for 38 years. When you buy insurance from them, you are buying their incredible expertise and their ability to work FOR YOU. If your insurance company does not do this, you are with the wrong company! |
| We have USAA. We know several people who were dropped first accident that was not an expensive accident. If it is something minor we always pay out of pocket first. I'd go through the other persons insurance company first. |

Wow. Not my experience at all. Were these people at fault and/or did they have major vehicle violations? Like DUI or reckless driving?? I had a pretty expensive accident, but was not at fault. USAA did everything possible for me and it never increased my premiums. They went after the other company. This is the way it should work. I don't have time to deal with other people's insurance companies. That's one reason I pay USAA. They also have shops all lined up and the repairs were as quick as could be expected. Paid for the rental car, etc. |
State Farm does it, too. I've always just gone to get my car repaired and they are the ones who deal with the other person's insurance and get reimbursed. I've been hit by others about 4 times over the past 25 years, and it's always worked like this. |
Have you tried to switch carriers? If you've been with State Farm for 25 years, then you are likely paying way too much. If you try to switch, I guarantee they will bring those accidents that weren't your fault up. They do count against you. OP, call the other guy's insurance company. Give them your recorded statement. They will decide fault. Hopefully, it will be their insured's fault, and they will authorize payment of the claim. Have someone do an assessment of the damage. Have the body shop work with the guy's insurance to make sure they will accept whatever it is they will pay because I guarantee it will be less than what the body shop tells you it will be. |

Uh, what you all are describing is how all insurance companies work.
To the OP, if you have the time and can get the citation number from the police, dealing directly with the other person's insurance company directly is the way to go. |
