what was the best present your baby received?

I'm drawing a blank on coming up with a special present for a close friend who's due in 2 weeks with her first (a girl, if it matters)

Monogrammed quilt with baby's initials. Necklace for me with baby's initials in a charm.

Handmade quilt.

Many may disagree with me, but a nice personalized blanket is great for a girl. My DD loves all of her baby blankets, and plays with them all as blankets for her dolls. When she outgrows this, I will pack some away for her when she becomes a mom and have some made into a quilt for her.

I got a nice frame with DD's name and birth date on it that I liked a lot as well. I put a picture of the first time we met in it.

The most useful gift I received was a fleece jacket in 12 month size (DD was born in Nov), but that's not quite as exciting or special.

A wooden step stool with her name in puzzle letters. 5 years in, that things gets used multiple times a day to reach the sink in the bathroom.

I'd recommend against a blanket. We got 2 handmade and several more store bought. Plus an entire pack of A&A swaddling blankets... it's just way more than we needed.

The most helpful thing for me was books. I had totally forgotten all about books and my mother passed down several of my Dr. Seuss books along with other favorites to us.

Please do not buy a blanket.

Signed,

Mom of a 3 month old girl who got 22 (!!!) blankets, most personalized and therefore not returnable.

+1

We got 18 for my daughter. So we had all 18 for when my son was born and received 8 more for him. Now I have 26 baby sized blankets. I could almost use a different blanket every day for a month for the stroller which is really the only place I ever use blankets.

This! Good for many years.

Just keep a dozen quilts and blankets in the closet. Along with a bag of my childhood quilts and blankets in the closet. Such a waste of space and too hot to use for anything.

I just received two mani-pedi gift cards, a bottle of wine and a wine glass that says "mommy's juice." My absolute favorite baby-related gifts.

We also got a ton of books which I love because a lot of my friends chose books they liked as kids.

We got THREE of these. We have one bathroom.

This is why registering for gifts is a good idea.

agree that a nice monogrammed blanket is a great gift. depends on the price range you want to spend but a necklace with a pendant with the baby's name or initials would be really nice (though, that's obviously for the mom, not the baby). in general, I think any personalized gift is nice like a wooden block (http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/4041299/?catalogId=84&sku=4041299&bnrid=3580801&cm_ven=Google_PLA&cm_cat=Shopping&cm_pla=Home%20page&cm_ite=Datafeed&gclid=CK7jyeOGrcwCFQkyaQod4EMI5Q&kwid=productads-adid^42847046620-device^c-plaid^79115570260-sku^4041299-adType^PLA), a growth chart (http://www.landofnod.com/ice-cream-decal-growth-chart/f19208) a personalized book (http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/snuggle-bunny-personalized-book/?pkey=bbooks&&bbooks). Books in general are always a great gift and nice, hardcover copies of classic books were some of the best gifts we received.

If you are looking for something more functional/useful, a really nice hooded towel (not one of the thin, flimsy newborn ones but a thick, bigger one they can use for years) and washcloth set is a good gift; or maybe something they can use later on that they are less likely to have already received as a gift like a basket full of nice toddler feeding supplies-we loved this bowl and plate set (http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/pink-sentiment-feeding-set/?pkey=btabletop-and-feeding&&btabletop-and-feeding), sippies, utensils, bibs

These amazing yarn-knit booties that never, never, never fell off.

We also got some personalized blankets that were nice. We got a lot of use out of them, and our daughter still uses them as bedding for her baby dolls and stuffed animals, as "picnic blankets" with her play kitchen, and as capes for being a super hero.

A personalized book. She was totally obsessed with the book that spelled out her name.
