Durable shoes for REALLY active preschooler?

Anonymous
3 yo DS has torn holes in his Saucony shoes after less than 2 weeks. It's something about the way he drags his toes when he rides his plasma car, scooters, etc...

Anyone in a similar boat and have a recommendation for shoes for a kid who is really tough on his shoes?

On a side note, anyone have success getting Stride Rite to refund or replace shoes that have lasted such a short amount of time? I realize it's the way he's riding his toys that is causing this but at the same time these are pretty normal preschooler activities.

Thanks.

Sounds like he needs more supervision, reminders not to drag his feet. That will wear holes in any shoes.

Of course we talk about this with him. But shoes are expensive so I just thought I'd see if some people have had better experiences with particular brands before I buy a new pair.

No - you need to teach him not to drag his feet. If it is a particular area that he is hard on (like the toes), look into shoes that are rubber at that point.

In the interim, another alternative is to get him some cheaper play shoes - check out 6 pm and look to see what sort of clearance shoes they have in his size. Many times, the shoes are just ugly, but decent shoes that have a crazy pattern colors, etc (I've seen Nike, New Balance, etc in this category). Or head to the outlets and find the cheapest shoes Nike has in his size. I think SR has closed all of their outlet stores in this area.

No - this isn't normal wear and tear. I have two boys who play pretty hard, but they have never torn holes in shoes.

wow really? i too have 2 boys and they have worn holes in shoes numerous times. Things like the balance bike, scooters and skateboarding are really tough on shoes.

OP- we have had better luck with shoes that have more leather in the front. Something like this:
http://www.striderite.com/en/srt-preschool-prescott-sneaker/20420P.html?dwvar_20420P_color=CB54051

the more running style types have never worked for us with Nike kids being the worst and falling apart after 2 weeks. you really need something with full leather in the front and good stitching.

No, they have never worn holes in their shoes, but I prefer New Balance sneakers and/or shoes that have a rubber toe. I also tell my kids not to drag their feet!

Did they ever have a a balance bike? because really the only way to stop is to drag feet. i am glad those days are over.

In all seriousness though my husband has ripped apart his sneakers skateboarding. i guess it just depends on the activities your kids do.

I used to work there (for about 10 years). Generally in store, to keep the customer happy, we would exchange for either an identical pair, or apply the money spent toward another pair (same size). If you had a receipt or were in the system, so we could see when the shoes were actually purchased. But really, after that, you're on your own. Do the shoes still function? Does he actually have HOLES in the shoes after less than two weeks? I've seen a lot, and I find it surprising that a child tore actual holes in his shoes after fewer than 14 days.

I don't have rec for a brand, but look for a style with (surprise) a reinforced toe. For example, something like this:http://www.striderite.com/en/ride-sneaker/12124B.html?ref=saucony&dwvar_12124B_color=ST53741#q=saucony&start=1 instead of something like this: http://www.striderite.com/en/jazz-hook-%26-loop-sneaker/12051B.html?ref=saucony&dwvar_12051B_color=ST35410A#q=saucony&start=1

If you already have sneakers with reinforced toe, then your solution is to understand that your child goes through shoes quickly and you have to replace them often, and/or teach him to stop dragging his toes when he rides his toys.

Keens are exceptionally hard wearing, they still look new when my kid grows out of them.

^This. Or go to the thrift store and get him some play shoes to wear when he's doing something like the balance bike wear he is dragging his feet a lot.

I also always kept play shoes on hand for muddy terrain, etc.

Go to Target. Buy cheap shoes for play. When they're trashed, buy another pair.
