Lena Dunham isn't that talented

Sure, it's great that a young woman is as successful as she is and doing creative work, getting applauded for it and is in the spotlight so other girls can look up to her. But aside from Being female, she isn't very talented. Her writing borders on poor and subpar, her acting is just her acting as herself and taking her clothes off in every shot. Her stories are juvenile and vapid. She thinks it's deep or profound to present young women in unflattering and messy ways. I just can't even. So over her.

If she were as vapid and self centered as her character, there's no way she could write the character because she would have no insight. She isn't her character; if she were, it would be a reality show instead of a scripted, plotted one. Clearly many people think that she has talent and a fresh perspective because the show is popular. Young women and young people in general often get themselves into messy, unpleasant situations. Not all of youth is roses and puppies and happy endings. Her show makes me cringe sometimes not because it's bad but because I've been in a few of the situations depicted, and they make me remember my younger, dumber self.

I seriously don't understand what it is about Lena Dunham that threatens so many people. There are too many tv writers making bad tv to count, but for some reason she (who in my opinion makes a good show) needs to be constantly discussed. I get it you don't like it. I think the Big Bang theory is garbage but I don't start threads about hating Chuck Lorre. It has to be her being a woman, I guess. You'd think that not having the ideal female body or portraying a woman who doesn't dress like Kate Middleton was a hanging offense judging by some of the comments on this and the Girls thread.

She is not talented. She has guts and gumption and is grave and bold about presenting her work. She's all show and no substance. And the reason people keep talking about her is because she is shoved down our throats and her work is elevated to be seen as this pseudo intellectual meditation on urban youth. But really its so bad it's full of bad cliches

Shes's a bold, smart, controversial woman who is not beautiful-- any thing that she does that people don't like will garner far more contempt than if she was an unattractive man. I'm not necessarily including the OP in this assessment, but I think people don't like to see women who aren't demure and ladylike, and reserve special disgust of they are not conventionally attractive.

I agree 100% never got her appeal. I think her show is trite and boring.

I agree. She has connections, not talent. Pisses me off!

Wow I totally disagree. I'm 32 - is it an age thing maybe?

Would you say the same about, say, Seth rogan? He's sort of a male equivalent of her.

She's automatically more provocative because she's not conventionally attractive. So right there every e thinks she should shut up.

Have you seen Tiny Furniture? Not everyone's cup of tea but I think it showcases her writing and acting talent quite well.

How is she shoved down your throat? I never hear anything about her unless I am looking to talk about girls (and I sometimes look, sometimes I don't). Maybe you are celebrity gazing a bit too much.

Or looks.

Did you see a recent episode of Girls focusing entirely on Marnie. Lena wasn't in the episode but she wrote it. I thought it was really good.
