I was wondering if anyone had an idea of when TJ admissions decisions will be released? It seems like in the past, it has usually been early April-ish. But the website says "by April 30". And, of course, SIS/essays and teacher recs were delayed this year due to weather.
Before people jump in line to say that they will be out when they're out, I get this. And it's not that I can't wait another second, although it would be nice to settle DS's HS. But TJ admissions are going to end up having a big impact on DS's summer plans, and by extension our entire family's. If he were to get in and decides to attend (his call), he would probably need to do summer school because he plays an instrument and wants to try to keep up with band in HS. Which impact the timing of our summer vacations, which impacts the dates of his sibling's camps, etc. Plus, if he is not in summer school, there is a camp he wants to attend with a hard registration deadline in earl-mid April. TJ is a probably a long shot for DS, as it is for many kids in the pool. But not impossible, so I don't want to put him in a position where summer school is impossible. Long winded way to say. Anyone out there in DCUMland have a sense about whether decisions might be out by late in the first week/ early in the second week of Apeil? |

No sense of the date either.
But I was rather annoyed to get that email the other day for summer school for TJ. It made me think - if you get in I don't think I really want you to go! It's one thing to take your personal finance over the summer or make sure you have wiggle room for band - but the email made is sound like summer school was almost required! When did summer school become mandatory for TJ? As a TJ applicant my kid is already in Hn Geometry & WLII - that's 4 high school credits - I don't want to rush growing up! |
Agree with it's insane If you want to do band or strings though, there is no way around doing summer school to get the social studies credit, since TJ adds an extra class the the freshman lineup. We had looked at PE in summer school, but the other thread convinced me that that would be a huge headache, especially since DC hates to exercise. |
Summer school is necessary for kids who want to do band or strings, just because there are so many required courses at TJ. Kids who aren't doing music don't absolutely need to do summer school. I know a number if kids who never did summer school at TJ. I wrote about my own kid on the other thread about summer PE. He did a variety of activities each summer, but never summer school. I think he did better during the school year because his summers were a time away from the stresses of the academic year. |
I am a music teacher whose son is waiting to hear from TJ too. This really makes me sad. He is currently in a full-year theater elective, and has a very large part in the school musical. He also happens to be very good at Math and Science. Honestly, in a way, I hope he misses qualifying. If he gets in, I think he will want to go, but I would hate for him to lose the ability to participate in something he really loves. (though not necessarily as a career) |

So what is probably a stupid question. The TJ summer school e-mail says that current TJ students and incoming freshmen can register starting today. What do you do if you are awaiting a TJ decision? Common sense says you wait for a decision, and if you get accepted and need summer school then you register. Right? Otherwise you have hundreds of people registering and then cancelling. But I was looking for an alternate registration date or instructions for applicants and didn't see any info.
Anybody know the answer to this? I feel stupid (and helicoptery) calling the TJ admissions office and asking. But I don't want to assume that I can wait and register DC later if needed and miss registration. DC also wants to keep up with her strings in high school. (I may be too used to our MS which specifically says things like: the HS counselor is coming tomorrow. You need to go see the counselor from your base high school and register, even if you think you might go to TJ). |
| Registration ends May 27 |
| anyone knows the TJ admission decision date for this year? |
|
The website says by April 30.
When were decisions made last year? Everything was delayed this year so I'm guessing it could be 3 weeks later than last year but no later than April 30. Np here but I'm also wondering about summer plans like other camps. |
| Last year, first week of April. |
| I remember it came over spring break last year. We were in NYC and trying to figure out how to log into the TJ admissions website on DH's phone while we were at the Natural History Museum, LOL! |
FCPS loves to time these things on Fridays and before holidays, to slow down the phone calls of crazed parents. Good Friday would be excellent-- but probably too soon with the blizzard delays. |
| So the best guess would be 4/22 Fri or 4/29 Fri. |
Just for information purpose may we know which camp he is going to attend. Some of us may want to try such camp activities. |
UVA's SEP is the one that concerns me. He's already applied, and will get a response by 4/15 (last year it was closer to 4/1) . We're hoping he will get in, because he has the last couple of years. But session I is before the end of school, so he could only apply to II & III which are during TJ summer school. I would be so nice of someone in the know would take pity and leak info anonymously. Anyone? Please? |
