I just don't see where the self preservation mechanism kicks in for either Israel or Palestinians. Netanyahu failed to keep the country safe on 10/7, his aide is going to be sentenced to jail for falsifying Netanyahu's phone records' time stamps and transcripts from the morning of 10/7. He knew the situation was going to lead to war but he needed the young people of Israel to fight to get rid of Hamas instead of fight to get rid of him.

Palestinians overran Israel on Oct 7. A few hundred armed with light weapons were hours away from taking over the whole country. Don’t listen to me. This is what the Israelis government, IDF and US government have said.

They overrun it because Netanyahu wanted it to be overrun. The IDF was given stand down orders and to stand and watch at the gate without drawing their weapons. Netanyahu wanted the country in terror and panic so he can remain the dictator in waiting there and avoid what were his imminent corruption charges and resignation from office.

Hezbollah knew very well that Israel would subsequently engage them in southern Lebanon.

It seems to me that all parties got what they wanted. Hamas and Hezbollah and the Netanyahu government all wanted war. And war is what they got. And Hamas and Hezbollah chose wrong.
