Speaker of the House Vote Thread

Are there any Independents in the House? I don't think so.

Good idea but who would nominate him? The MAGAs won’t and the other Rs are sticking with Kevin. Maybe a moderate Democrat would once Kevin stands down?

I don't see that happening.

I said something similar yesterday, but this is a Washington parlor game. If 60% of Americans 17 and over could name the most recent Speaker of the House I would be shocked. This matters to people who follow politics/the base of both parties. Dem voters don't want to see Hakeem Jeffries' name withdrawn or someone challenging him. What do Democrats gain by doing anything but remaining unified?
You don’t think people would know Pelosi was the most recent speaker?

Not 60%.

Magic number is 218.

Sure. no one cares about anything, politics is all just a game. Failing to raise the debt ceiling limit was just a game, shutting the federal government for over a month was just a game, it's all just a game.

The most fury I ever saw about a government shutdown was during the Obama years when the American cemeteries in Normandy were closed and elderly veterans couldn't visit the cemetery. shutdowns are barely a shutdown anymore. Joe Blow in Dallas doesn't even notice.

The R party let the [crazy] dogs out. Now, they can't control them. They unleashed their crazies onto this entire country.

So many of these clowns should not be in Congress — they should be in jail or home, after losing their elections or forced to resign or forbidden to hold office as insurrectionists etc etc. Therefore, here we are.

If you asked the question, "Who is the most recent Speaker of the House of Representatives?," no other context, I stand by my 60% number.

I think you're wrong. My relatives, who are all moderate/independent sometimes-voters in NC, have been texting me asking wtf is going on. The last time that happened was Jan 6th.

OMG, does that mean Jeffries has it??

There is no way they are letting the guy promise all this stuff and then say “but you can’t fire me if I don’t do any of that”.

What is your position/occupation in DC?

You don’t want the Dems to hold strong. That’s what happens in communist countries. Individualists act like it.

DP. I mean, I get that. That almost sounds rational. But there's no alternative. It's him or Jeffries, who isn't going to do any of that at all, while McCarthy may do some of the things he's promised.

The Speaker needs 50%+1 of all votes cast (excluding those voting present), not a plurality.
