What kind of guy sees prostitutes?

Anonymous
I just found out an older male friend of mine sees prostitutes (escorts, sugar babies, whatever). He apparently meets then online. My instinctive reaction to this is just disgust, but am I being too uptight? He says it's the only way for him to meet younger attractive women.

It's really none of your business.

I believe you answered it. Eww, this person has problems, but more importantly it's illegal and slimy.

No you're not uptight, he's lying about meeting women. Myself I would distant myself from this person, not someone I would allow in my circle.

well it's hard-wired in our evolution to trade what we have for what we want.. oh and to reproduce.

So it isn't odd for a man with means to pay for sex, arm candy, and/or companionship. Or for a beautiful woman (especially one without other talents) to exchange her body, brains, and/or youth for money or security (whether through marriage or a sugar daddy).

And no - I'm not saying this is great and my husband is not rich, but I get it.

I would be completely disgusted if I found this out about someone and would likely not associate with them anymore.

I understand that prostitutes are making a choice, but since it is illegal in this country, prostitution is an industry that is so so so so so so so terrible to women. They are abused, downtrodden and taken advantage of. Any man who participated in this degradation of women would be disgusting to me.

I think I would feel differently about a man who saw a prostitute in Nevada or Amsterdam. I would still be skeeved out by it, but I wouldn't immediately think of it as an irreconcilable character flaw.

A pathetic guy.

You somehow found out, or he told you which would make it your business. How would you feel about someone selling drugs or stealing? It's the same thing. This guy would become my distant friend quickly.

I would be disgusted regardless of where it's done. A troubled person, what else do they do that you don't know about.

Yeah probably, that was me trying not to be unilaterally harsh. I certainly would never have sex with someone who had.

I really don't understand the immediate knee jerk MYOB with no discussion here.

This isn't about meddling in someone else's affairs. It's about how you see a friend after learning something about their moral character.

For me, personally, I would fin the personally sad and pathetic (and disgusting), and I would limit the friendship. Other people may be able to separate out this friends activities from the friendship, bt I don't think I could. Or maybe we'd still stay friends to a certain degree but I'd certainly view them differently.

It's none of your business. There are lots of issues with sex work, with the well-being and treatment of the women who engage in it is at the center. However, if these are consenting women, and your friend treats them with respect and dignity, it's a win-win situation. (And YES: these women are likely disadvantaged and don't want to be in this situation. It's a sad reality, but it is what it is. Better someone like your friend who's hopefully treating them respectfully, than some creep who's going to be rude, violent or worse).

At the end of the day, men are evolutionarily hard-wired to want sex. If a man isn't able to get it in the more 'traditional' sense (find a nice person, have sex with them) they are likely to go a more non-traditional route. Considering that other non-traditional routes include sexual assault, I think a consensual transaction between to adults is a good alternative.

Repeat: none of your business, and not the situation to project your morals onto.

That's like asking what kind of guy smokes cigarettes...there's no one clear-cut answer you doofus. Just like there are all kinds of guys who smoke from rough and rugged cowboys like Clint Eastwood to cool and charming casanovas like Frank Sinatra the same thing goes for guys seeing prostitutes, there are all kinds. And guess what - prostitution has been around even longer than cigarettes!!

If he's single, I'd say it's his business. I'm not going to judge a person for paying for or selling sex. The thing to be mindful of is that it's a tough transaction to make and keep ethics intact regarding the woman being treated well, not coerced, not abused, not degraded.
