The Stigma of North Bethesda

Anonymous
Not talking about Rockville pretending to be North Bethesda, but about 20814, north of NIH, still Bethesda. The houses are a good $250,000 less than south of NIH and renovated and nice. Is it worth it to buy in North Bethesda even if people seem to look down on it?

You can't handle the stigma, so you should go somewhere else.

Why on god's green earth do you give a f*ck what other people think about where you live?

Questions you should be asking:

Do YOU like the area, neighbors, schools, etc.? Does the commute work for YOU?

All that said, since you're so concerned about what other people "look down on", you should definitely be in Bethesda proper or Potomac. You'll find more of your kind there.

What is the stigma? 20814 is still Bethesda. Is there an issue with being near NIH? I thought that's good for renters/commuters. Haven't heard of any stigma tbh.

OP, simply by the fact that you are asking this question means you won't be happy there. You care way too much about what people think about where you live, and it's not like N.Bethesda is a shitty place, you know?

20814 is Bethesda! It's not a bullcrap North Potomac or North Bethesda(the part that actually is a Rockville zip that like to say North Bethesda such as the White Flint area) Go look at map. A current map or a map from 100 years ago. It's Bethesda. Bye the way, there are lots of very wealthy families there. I believe 2 of the wealthiest in the entire DC area live there.

Lower case, N, friend. North Bethesda - formerly Rockville. Different from north Bethesda, the northern end of Bethesda.

You might want to look at the other thread on Wood Acres vs BE.

Some people are willing to pay a premium to be walkable to downtown Bethesda. If that's not something you value, then you shouldn't pay the premium.

It just seems really inconvenient but I can't be car-dependant.

OMG, the "stigma" of 20814. I can't even.

I live in 20814, but south edge - in downtown Bethesda, practically.

I bought there for the walkability and Bethesda elementary school, and would never move to the part you're talking about, even though the houses are perfectly fine, the schools good, etc. My friend lives there, and has had some issues with crazy racist people on the listserve. However I suppose there are racist crazy people everywhere.

It all depends on your priorities, OP. And your money.

In high school, OP was the wannabe who can't get dressed in the morning without calling three friends to get their approval on her outfit.
