The Stigma of North Bethesda

Anonymous
Um, we'd love to live there no matter what you call it - but we will never be able to afford it. I love that area - close to metro, close to work, good schools.

Houses are great, but I'd try the commute from there a few times before even considering it. Trying to get north of the NIH during rush hour is a real charlie foxtrot. Might account for much of that significant premium. If you work north of there though, or close by, it would be a great neighborhood.

I didn't even realize there was a "stigma" to Rockville itself. I mean, I think people who call that one neighborhood "North Bethesda" or whatever are kind of pretentious/silly, but I wouldn't look down on someone for living in Rockville even if it was the part that people CALL Rockville.

TL;DR: What the fuck are your prattling on about, OP?

Oh, our poor, poor children, whose middle school has the stigmatizing "North Bethesda" label in its very name! How will they face the world?

Actually, comparing Bethesda and North Bethesda (even the Rockville part) is nothing like comparing N Arlington to S Arlington....that's what makes OP's question so ridiculous. N Bethesda isn't much of a step down in terms of schools and SES.

You people. If this is your only problem in life, count yourself lucky. You must be a neurotic.

No comparison. There are actually poors in S. Arlington.

You mean Pothesda

OP, it's not stigma, it's different school pyramids. Prices reflect that perception.

That area is very nice! Not sure what could be the problem? Prices are driven by the distance to downtown and schools. The schools there are good, but for whatever reason people pay more for some other high schools.

The hilarious part is that the neighborhood in question, north of NIH, includes the church that gave Bethesda its name. You can't get more Bethesda.

It's like Burleith or Glover Park...it ain't Georgetown!

Only the real estate agents call it North Bethesda. Those who live there call it Rockville.
