Last year they failed to change bell times properly because they because they don't have enough school busses.
Three days after this blizzard they still had unplowed roads. They can't seem to get their trash collectors out for possibly the entire week following blizzard. And now they cancel school yet another day. And this is one of the richest counties in the country? |
| I have a friend who lives in Arlington whose street was just plowed for the first time today and Fairfax schools are closed all week, so it's not just Montgomery County that doesn't have their act together. |
|
They're rich because instead of spending tons on annual winter prep (snow plows, etc) every year, they only lose some income every 6-7 years when there is a significant blizzard. It's frustrating for us residents, but financially, they come out on top. |
| You know Fairfax, Howard, and Baltimore counties cancelled way before Montgomery did. And those counties have already cancelled for Friday. I don't think it's something specific to MCPS. |
| There was no reason to cancel school today! and definitely no reason to cancel school; tomorrow-it is absolutely ridiculous. So glad we are moving out of this asinine county! |
| The whole DMV region sucks! |
+1 |
They are too big. They waste tax dollars They don't have a snow emergency plan They rely on county snow plows to do their lots when most school districts in the country have smaller counties or private clean-up service in their budget They build too fast without having any schools to put the kids entering the new homes They have a monopoly on the booze and liquor licenses and none of that money is going to where it should be (so corrupt) The school board wastes money time and time again ($11 million on changing the times 20 minutes) and then complains they don't have enough each year for their budget They are liberal so they give away our taxes on citizens that are not even legal Most of the county that is rich don't send their kids to public so they don't care what the schools are like The middle class is shrinking faster than ever |
Most of the counties in this region are closed. Are you planning to move further south? Where hopefully it won't snow, but if it does they will be even less prepared. Good luck wherever you decide to move. |
| I suppose you complainers will explain away Howard County, Fairfax County, and Baltimore County's decisions to close the same way? People really have some nerve, looking out their own window at a cleared road and assuming they know better than school leaders all over the region about the state of the roads. |

What is wrong with MC? A lot. The county used to be a leader - and now it's afraid of it's own shadow. I used to walk to school in worse than this. If we fell, we just got back up. There are parents at every bus stop - someone will mind any kid that might be in harms way. Parking lots don't need to be perfect - clear them enough so people can get in and out. I remember in high school the huge mountains of snow and we parked wherever we found a spot. All roads should have had one plow by now - bus routes are public information - plow those early on. Don't get me started on lax immigration policies and religious holidays.
I long for the days when MC made education a priority and everything else came in 2nd. Made decisions based on the best interests of the kid, not to appease religious or cultural complaints. Money went towards the schools not to making sure that kids are clothed and fed for breakfast, lunch and dinner - not a school's job - there are other county services that can help with the needy. My advice - make the unpopular decision if it will get us back on top again. |
Nope...I would move back north where they know how to handle weather. |
Can I getta AMEN!!! This entire region honestly sucks. The people, the traffic, the over-building, the roads, the tolls, the corrupt politicians, the over-priced housing for high-ratio crappy schools. Everyone is either rich or trying to act rich (keep up with the Jones's in severe debt) or they are lower class expecting $15 to flip burgers. It just seems like normal middle class people are gone. Oh and the fact that most of the DMV doesn't speak English doesn't help much either. Just a transient location. Not a home. Never will be. |
| It is home for many of us. But if it doesn't feel like home for you, why do you stay? |
And that is because they can say exactly what is bolded. There is no sense of urgency or incentive to be prepared...because nobody else is and mediocrity loves company. |
