You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves. .....Abraham Lincoln |
That was actually written by Reverend William John Henry Boetcker.
|
Yeah, that was a mistake by Ronald Reagan. Or maybe he just thought the quote packed more punch if Lincoln had said it.
But he didn't. |
Yeah, we should definitely get rid of all the state universities and public schools. Everybody should pay full ride from now on! Especially those parasites at Thomas Jefferson High School. They have a lot of nerve expecting us all to pay for their world-class education! |
So, are the wealthy in this country "that" fragile that more liberal economic policies are going to bring them down? Highly doubtful. |
Yup. Oh, the wealthy are so misunderstood. Why doesn't anyone see how they are only looking out for their fellow man? |
Mistake?? By RR's speechwriters? Hahahahahahaha!!! Abe Lincoln was much more thoughtful and eloquent. Read the Gettysburg Address, for starters. Anyone who has read Lincoln's writing knows he couldn't possibly have written such simplistic drivel. RR's speechwriters were smart and educated. It was no mistake. |
Once again, the argument here is between those of us who see Obama as a man of reason following a faith-based charlatan and those who see him as an alien socialist following a patriot. We can talk at each other, but not to each other. |
translation? please, for us ignoramuses |
I meant that it's hard to have a conversation with someone whose value system is totally different. How can we agree on what's good for America when we don't agree on what "America" means? As one example, which is more fundamental to "America": capitalism and the right to keep what you earn or a decent meal, a place to live, and basic health care for even the poorest of us? |
OP--who cares who wrote it..I get it and I think I am in love |
I care. It's another stupid conservative blog thing, where people are circulating this quote to show how Obama doesn't follow in the footsteps of the president he admires so much. That would be an awesome slam, except that it is well known for several decades now that these are not Lincoln's words. FWIW, your dreamboat is a minister and deceased, but I hope you will find a way to carry on. |
Yeah, the quote is unassailable. In fact, it's so obvious it should go without saying. What should not go without saying is the tacit implication that Obama's actions contradict it. That's the issue, and many of us would dispute it. It's the old problem of differing assumptions. |
No. All Obama is doing is raising taxes somewhat on wealthy people. This is not an all-out assault on personal liberty or class warfare. Cry me a freakin' river. BTW, I am wealthy. I'm just not a whining little ninny. |
Here is an actual Lincoln quote:
Too bad Congress did not read it in 2003. |
