Sigh.... |
I know it's easy to look at almost everything through a bipartisan prism, but this Lincoln misattribution has been around for decades per Quotations Book.
Source: Erroneously attributed to ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Since the 1940s these Ten Points attributed to Lincoln have been widely reprinted. They have appeared in such places as magazines, Christmas cards, and the Congressional Record. The Library of Congress and Lincoln scholars believe that any connection made between Lincoln and the Ten Points is spurious, http://quotationsbook.com/quote/44449/ |
Well, it turns out that the original source of the misquotation was a conservative group opposed to the New Deal legislation. So it is actually a partisan issue. It is just an old one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._H._Boetcker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Committee_to_Uphold_Constitutional_Government |
Indeed! Thanks for that, PP.
This one is hardly applicable to consumer behavior right now, thrift is one thing that's holding the economy back, but the administration is not urging us to spend, at least not that I'm aware of. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. |
While we're at it, maybe we can recommend some nice Hallark card verses for him to read as well. Or a copy of "Chicken Soup for the Soul." He can read it while Michelle is busy scrapbooking. |

Agreed. All of this back and forth is just so.....yawn. The proof will be if this country continues to slide into a deeper and deeper sink hole or if we pull out. Regardless, history is in the making. American will either pull through like it always has, or we will just have to join the rest of the world. |
The sad thing is the divide I see in this country. I used to really not care about politics so much but now I feel I can't stand liberals and I am sure the feeling goes back to me. We are supposed to be in this together but I don't feel that way. I am not sure how we get past this. I was actually thinking if Texas found a way to cecede, I would like to move there. |
With all due respect, it was easy for a conservative to not care about politics when Bush was in office. Now you are experiencing what many of us in the left felt for eight years. I'm sorry you feel that way but I am wondering if you also just ignored us while Bush was in office and told yourself that we were "all in this together."

Difference is that I am not asking anything from you--I work hard and would like to keep my money and my insurance (that I pay for myself) and am sick of hearing that the government did anything for me..they didn't..I earned it..you want to have more of my money that I have earned lawfully and would like me to have worse insurance so it's a big difference there.. but with respect to the republicans..we weren't the same in the sense of nastiness that I see with the left ex. Sarah Palin??--we even saw the President laugh when Wanda Sykes make jokes about Rush dying..Also the media just doesn't report on anything in regard to the left or barely at best and that was not the case when the republicans were in office. I also saw that Bush didn't go for the jugular when he could..now we have Obama wanting to go after the previous administration for politcal currency..it's sad and maybe we agree that we are two Americas..I don't like you and you don't like me..but it's sad and I now see how countries totally fall apart. |
Wrong. You are asking me to subsidize two idiotic wars that I don't believe in, and to grossly enrich the military-industrial complex that is profitting from those wars hand over fist. You are asking me to pay for public school SCIENCE teachers to teach from textbooks that have no reference to Darwin (science) because you believe in Creationism (no basis in science.) You are making it difficult or impossible for me or anyone else to have an abortion, which is my legal and human right to choose and not your right to dictate. You are ACTIVELY PREVENTING my gay friends from getting married, which is NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS, frankly. You are allowing laws and regulations intended to keep a level playing field that have been in place for decades to be cast aside so that big business can make money unfettered, on the backs of and at the cost to working people. You are ACTIVELY BLOCKING health care reform that will NOT infringe on your ability to purchase private health insurance and have your own doctors, at the cost of MILLIONS of uninsured people.
Gosh, liberals are asking for common sacrifice for the common good, that we be our brother's keeping and take care of those who are unable to take care of themselves. AWFUL. What I find truly amusing is that so many self-professed "Christians" are hard core conservatives and have no empathy or care for the suffering and hardships of their fellow man. |
You managed to completely sidestep my point. I am not asking you to do anything--I am merely asking you to stop trying to take my lawfully earned money. Your guy is in so I can understand his programs going in but do I have to pay for them???????? As for the war..seems like it continues and it's nice now to be anti war now that we have had years of peace thanks to proactively keeping the fighting over there rather than here and eight years of it cost less than a strike of a pen for what Obama did in a few months. As for gay marriage..I have no problem with that and frankly if I was gay, I would be a republican now since republicans believe in getting rid of the inheritance tax which affects financially productive gays. yeah..it does. Did you know, by the way, that Barack Obama campained anti gay marriage so you can't pin that one on me--do you like him knowing that. As for equal opportunity--talking to the wrong gal..I have worked my way up and it can be done but you have to work hard and smart..that's a bummer if you can't get there but it is not a reason to steal from me because I did get there. I have never wanted someone elses stuff..even when I was poor.
As for abortion--sorry but the same way I would say something if you wanted to kill a newborn is the way I feel about killing an unborn..did you have a child by the way?? Because if you did, it is really tough to say that it isn't a living thing..esp. after week 12--they wiggle around and you can see the eyes..it's sad that you think I should be quiet about murder. I am sick of the marketing effort to sanitize abortion..privacy..choice..it's all baloney.. Again..we are worlds away and I can tell that I would surely have a huge headache talking to you and how the world owes you something.. I just want to be left alone and allowed to care for my family..pay my taxes..fair taxes that will not mean I am spending 50% of every marginal dollar--this is what we are moving toward with state and fed taxes together. You would not like me either and again..I fear for our country because there is a huge divide and it is getting bigger. Again..this is how civil wars begin. |
I agree with the PP. My side asks nothing except what is perfectly fair and reasonable, while the other is so busy pushing its ideology that they fail to pay any attention to the points we are trying to make.
Now if you have trouble figuring out which of the two PPs I am agreeing with, that is my (somewhat satirical) point. Once more talking at, rather than to, each other. FWIW, TGFO! |
Bottom line is the issue of property rights..the left doesn't respect my property and my right to enjoy my property which is in our constitution. Somehow I am supposed to create a life for my family and just cede it over. not going to happen. Mayor Bloomberg gets this--he has been pretty open about there being a small number of people in NYC who bascially fund everything through taxes..think the number is around 50 thousand so that even if a small number leaves the city and the state..it has dramatic effect--while Rush leaving NYC was a joke to a lot of people..having the guy from the Bills leave is an omen of what is to come. People are going to move to better tax areas and are going to adjust their salaries to stay under taxes..and the state issue is just the beginning. As I stated before--I get it that the left is in and it's their time to have their programs but I don't want to pay for more and I won't pay for more..I will simply adjust my income as I refuse to pay more. |
11:14 here. You are proving my point. You seem to care about us all working together now that your side is out of power. You seem to have had no clue that during the Bush years there were a great many of us who watched our values trampled on, whose family members and friends died in a war that should never have been started, and whose taxes went to pay for that war. I don't have a problem with there being political and philosophical differences between people on the right and the left. I do have a problem when someone who is out of power whines about the situation as if this were something totally new that had never happened before -- as if Bush had been kind in victory and included the whole world under his umbrella and the political situation has only become divisive now that Obama is in power. Oh puh-lease. Be a grown up and stop feeling sorry for yourself. BTW, I didn't drink the Kool-Aid on Obama so insulting Obama in response to this post is not going to convince me you're right. |
