McLean to Explore Separating from FC & FCPS

Its fascinating to see so many posters being openly nasty and calling names regarding McLean... while still demanding access to the tax revenue brought by McLean tax payers. There is no disconnect there?

The virtue of a big county and big school system is to be able to spread things around a bit for the greater good. FCC formed because of its desire to avoid black people and they pretty well have succeeded.

How predictable. As has been stated repeatedly, McLean (and Great Falls) residents have been footing the bulk of the bill for renovations, new buildings, and expansions in schools across FCPS - for DECADES. McLean needs an addition, and has for some time , but the SB chooses to ignore this in favor of “equity.” Enough is enough.

it's just a coincidence that you'd have one of the whitest school systems in the area if McLean broke off. Also one of the most segregated with Langley having TJ numbers of URMs and McLean approaching 20%. I guess if you drew the boundaries carefully enough, you could make McLean just as 'good' as Langley

You ask for evidence that McLean/GF schools haven't been well served by FCPS, and then when it's provided you pivot and complain about what the demographics of separate school system that includes Langley, McLean, and their feeders would look like. I don't think that sputter fest is going to get you very far. People are fed up.

As usual, the people who want everyone to be brought down instead of up will resort to accusations of “racism.” Utter morons.

you probably want a better answer when it comes before a local governments commission and then before a special state court (both of which have to happen for city status) because it's going to be brought up by opponents

Who would oppose this?

is it really a valid argument to say "we don't want them to go because we want their money"....?

do you really think that people won't bring up segregation?

DP. Still waiting for you to accuse FCCS of “segregation.” Or is that somehow different?

That was literally the reason for incorporation- you may want to find a better example

Source? And Wikipedia doesn’t count.

That’s no surprise on DCUM; what’s more telling to me is the number of posters living in other parts of the county who say they’d do the same thing if they lived in McLean and/or had a similar opportunity.

How would this be fundamentally different than the current situation? This isn't segregation -if anything it will make FC/FCPS more diverse since it will no longer count a chunk of mostly non POC residents. I'm sure some will try the argument but ultimately, the rest of the county wants McLean money without giving McLean resources. Thats what it boils down to. Hard to make that argument with a straight face.

Let’s be clear, though: it’s not like most residents of the rest of the county actually sit around their homes at night thinking about how they can take Great Falls and McLean for a ride. It’s the people who run FCPS and the School Board who invariably conclude the best way for them to cut corners and promote their “equity” agenda is to short-change that area.

DP. True. Which is why we no longer want anything to do with FCPS or the current SB.

Yes, of course they would. It’s astounding to me how truly excellent FCPS actually was, up until maybe 15-20 years ago. I grew up attending these schools and remain so grateful for the education I received. How sad that recent SBs have changed the focus from educating our kids to social justice issues. What a waste.

I find it interesting that McLean posters on this thread think FCPS and the SB "being responsive" means getting everything they want. That's not what it means. I am certain that you have gotten attention for all of your complaints, been heard and responded to.

Yeah, no, not even close. Try to pay attention next time.

Maybe you’re OK with being lied to, misled, and ignored. That’s been our experience with FCPS over a multi-year period. We’re sick of it and ready to explore something different and, hopefully, better.

Didn't read the entire 35-page thread, so apologies if this has been raised and answered.

Wouldn't becoming an independent city require McLean to stand up a separate fire department, police department, local government structure, and a whole host of other things that would cost more taxpayer dollars? Surely there has to be some economy of scale, if you will, for McLean to remain part of Fairfax County because the costs for these services are spread across the entire county.

This isn't just about the school system.

DH and I were discussing exactly this. We don’t think it will raise taxes as much as people think. People in McLean are paying a lot on taxes since their houses are assessed at so much more. We are in Vienna and hope McLean succeeds with this and then we hope Vienna does the same. We have a house assessed at sound 900k. It is old, not remodeled and about 2000 sq ft. It would be worth half that on the other side of the county and we would pay a lot less in taxes. We have one of the least expensive homes in the area, so Vienna generates a lot of tax revenue and the houses are worth even more in McLean.

This whole idea frustrates me so much. We have been saving to get into a good pyramid. If the prices jump again, the kids might be in middle or high school before we can afford to upgrade. I mean, we can’t afford anything in McLean with enough bedrooms, not even a condo.

What a stupid comment. You clearly haven’t even read the thread, nor do you have any idea what the issues are. Go educate yourself.

You’re correct. It’s been noted a City of McLean could have a population at least twice as large as Fairfax City and four times as large as Falls Church City.

You are such an expert on FCC, tell us, exactly how diverse or not diverse are FCC schools now? Because whoever made those decisions in the 1940s are actually dead.
