I think this is probably right. The only question I have is whether the county will find a way to inject a little diversity into Whitman along the way. I don't see an obvious way to do that, but it does seem to go against what the BoE has been all about to embark on a major change to the HS in and around Bethesda while making the richest, white-est HS even wealthier and whiter than ever while the others (BCC, WJ, and Woodward) include some racial/ethnic/SES diversity.

Diversity will come to Whitman with the Westbard development.

MoCo has to stop trying to bus people into diverse schools and to just have policies to encourage more diversity in housing instead so that people of different income levels live in the same community. Instead they are building teardown McMansion after teardowns McMansion in Bethesda. Why not some subdividing lots with smaller houses too? What about duplexes? The 6000 square foot McMansions take up the entire lot and house four people and a fancy purebred dog max in a space that could house 10-20 people instead.

That will eventually need to happen

It needs to happen NOW. Or yesterday. We have no leadership in this county.

For decades the county built low-income projects up North or East. I agree it's time they show leadership and place all future projects in the Western close-in areas to ensure there is an equitable FARMS distribution @W's.

Clustering low income housing together has meant that gangs can harass people all in one place - threatening people and regularly hitting people up for money . Stupid.

+1

There shouldn't be a concentration of low income housing. It should be distributed.

Right, and since up until now it has all been "distributed" in Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, and Germantown, it's time to "distribute" more of it in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac. I'd love to see them sue because the coverage in the media would be so entertaining. What can they say other than "I didn't pay $2 million to live near those people!"

I want to see low income housing in all parts of County. If it was true then we wouldn't be discussing fall of housing price in WJ due to rezoning.

This is exactly the problem. The wealthier western part of the county has been able to segregate themselves and create schools with inflated test scores imply by locking out nearly all low income students. Distribute them evenly across all the schools and everyone west will see a slight dip in scores while those east will see a slight rise and you will see that overall, we aren't as far apart as we seem. But then, why did they pay top dollar for the house in WJ?

I think things will only be just if ALL wealth moves out of MoCo and into NOVA and the District. Why should MoCo have any mostly upper middle class areas left at all?

But you knew that when you moved there. There is an other side of the argument that building it in cheaper areas means there will be more of it to go around considering there isn't enough currently. That said why did you move to Silver Spring, south Arlington, Germantown or the like if you didn't wan't to be around poor people? At the end of the day you wanted the discount and now you have jealousy issues that others were able to avoid it. Life isn't fair, Rich people will always avoid it because they are rich(er) and they have options.

Every person in Bethesda or North Arlington could have moved to Silver Spring or South Arlington. They chose not to, Most everybody in Silver Spring chose not to live in PG. see how that works. Now the people in Silver Spring are bitter that there is a group that ignores them and now they want to lash out the only way they think they will notice. But it isn't going to happen all the while the east county is getting poorer and browner and they think building a little public housing in the west will change that. It won't and most developers rather sell to the rich so don't hold your breath.

So your point is "If we have to have black and Latino kids, so should you!!" and then to bus them out of your area across town so the rich areas can feel your pain?

Something should be done to offset decades of segregation and redlining that created this situation. Everyone benefits from integrated schools.

You know black people are allowed to move right?

When people buy homes they are looking for a certain kind of population with regards to neighborhood and schools, that certain type doesn't have to be white, they need to be of their educational and income levels. When someone buys in Silver Spring, they know the demographics, they are aware of the demographics of schools, then why do they expect benefits of Bethesda at Silver Spring prices??? This discussion is almost childish.

Stupid.

Something should be done to offset decades of segregation and redlining that created this situation. Everyone benefits from integrated schools.

No they don’t, there isn’t one study that shows higher SES areas benefit from propping up the poor. There are also conflicting studies on if the poor truly benefit or they just get hidden better in the data. I’ll concede if you take a small handful and truly integrate them in to a rich area (pay their way) I am sure they’ll do better but then they are living a rich life which they didn’t really earn (yes I concede people have more when given free stuff) and there are simply not enough rich people to prop up all the poor people in this country.

Look at it this way, if diversity is so great, you should thank your lucky stars you have so much. You should feel sorry for the Potomacs and McLeans of the world who don’t know the joys of people clipping their toe nails on a bus. Enjoy your silver spring charm

It will happen with Woodward coming here. WJ/Woodward will be mixed with DCC schools.

Woodward will be and it will take Kensington and the Garrett park with it. The Bethesda homes will stick to WJ and it will be better off

When someone buys in Silver Spring, they know the demographics, they are aware of the demographics of schools, then why do they expect benefits of Bethesda at Silver Spring prices??? This discussion is almost childish.

1) More white children in your school is not a "benefit."
2) There are no school "benefits" that the wealthy get that the middle class does not. You are under the impression that you bought a certain school when you bought a house, but you paid a seller (and a real estate agent), not a school district.
3) I don't see anybody posting here excitedly looking to move from their Silver Spring school to Woodward. I only see people defending their kids and community from people who see them as trash.
