What does this post mean?? |
Someone is just trying to bump up the thread. That's all.
They could have written peanut butter instead. |
Does anyone know what the actual percentage of students admitted in any given year? I saw 40% on some other thread, but that seems high to me. Is that true? |
If you go with any year other than 4th grade entry, I would say it is in the 20-30 percent range for entry years (there are years where they might take a student or two, but the acceptance percentage would be very low). 4th grade is clouded because of Beauvoir. You can say it's easier to get in that year, because they take about 80 percent or more of the Beauvoir boys, or you could instead think about the admissions process as having taken place years earlier (in Pre-K and K). It's a Cathedral school so it will try to take from the Cathedral elementary. I might compare it to Sidwell entry at grade 4, but think about what are the chances of getting into Sidwell grade 4 if you went to Sidwell in grade 3. That is basically what happens for 4th grade entry to St. Albans. |
I was wondering about entry into 4th grade. Discounting the 75% or so who come from Beauvoir, does anyone know the acceptance rates for outside students? In other words, is it 40% at 4th grade for non-Beauvoir boys? |
I can't imagine that it's that high. After the Beauvoir boys are accepted, there are maybe 20 places left (and perhaps fewer) in the 4th grade class. A 40% accept rate would mean they get only 50 applications from outside of Beauvoir for fourth. |
Is St. Alban's the first choice for most people with boys? |
Where do non-Beauvoir boys typically come from? Is there another feeder school or is it random? Anyone hear of boys coming from River School? |
For C Form, most non-Beauvoir boys are from public schools. Concord Hill seems to place at least one boy per year. Otherwise, it seems random. |
How well does St. Albans handle boys with ADD or ADHD? |
Another question about STA-- and actually other boys schools too. How do they handle boys who bully or get in another boy's physical space in an intimidating way? We think about single sex schools but sometimes I worry about the "Lord of the Flies" breaking out on the playground. |
Anyone know the admissions rate for 9th grade or have any tips on applying for 9th grade? Any feedback on the 9th grade visit day in terms of how much is shadowing and how much is interviewing? |
I don't know why you think that would be the case because it's single sex. I don't ever hear of bullying at StA. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but it's certainly not widespread. |
I am sorry if my post implied that I thought just because STA was single sex there would be bullying. That is not what I think, nor meant to imply. However, when you read literature on boys and their social environments you learn that they attempt to create social heirachies within the class and attempt to create a pecking order, which once established has the effect of decreasing aggression amongst the boys. (See Michael Thompson). If some of the "normal" social tendencies with boys go arwy, then how is it handled? Another parent who has a child at Mater Dei told me that anyone who strikes another child or intimidates another boy is sent home in a Barwood Taxi-- that is their way of handling such behaviors. So I am wondering what discipline strategies STA has in place should such an incident occur? |
Good to hear that about Mater Dei. That's one of the schools that we are considering. |
