SSFS Will Stay Open

All this secrecy just makes me uneasy. I don’t even know if I trust the “angel” donor anymore. Are they really an angel? I don’t feel saved right now. Just more confused. Let’s face it - without that blank check there isn’t enough COMMUNITY support to keep this school afloat right now. So ultimately it won’t work unless angel donor keeps writing blank checks. But why should they keep doing that? Maybe relying on just one persons miracle was a bad plan.

If the board had been replaced on day 1 I’d be feeling more confident in the coalition/angel donors ability to actually do something. But clearly neither has any power to make the board change.

This is absolutely not true.

Let the school publish an up to date faculty list for next year so no one has to question it right?

So you think parents have the right to know who will be teaching before making decisions, and time to make those decisions, but teachers don’t have the right to know who their students will be, and time to make their decisions?

Not at all. I think the school has screwed over the teachers even worse than the students. This is why I dont see why any teacher should stay here.

But i still need to know this to re enroll.

This is where I am. I am a current family who thankfully found another option for my child/ren. We had a great experience at SSFS before the announcement, and I'd be open to staying at SSFS IF leadership were more forthcoming with their info and I didn't have to go to an online FAQ or Slack or even DCUM to find anything out.

I'm finding that some supporters are trying really hard to control the narrative. It's full of toxic positivity. I'm sorry you need more students, I really am, but calling me a troll for expressing concerns is not the way you are going to get my family back.

My disappointment is that the angel donor appears to have made board changes a contingency of the donation but not meaningful transparency with the families of the school and the public. Perhaps leadership of the coalition knows what is going on (maybe not) but to repair trust with the families and make it reasonable for them to stay, being open about the many unanswered questions is key.

They can at least share which teachers aren’t coming back! I know for a fact some teachers weren’t offered contracts before the news of the school closing. I’m sure other teachers have let the school know they are leaving. Let us know who they are! If they aren’t coming back regardless of enrollment numbers what’s the problem?

Yes, if it weren't for all this turmoil, don't they usually share with us when someone is leaving? I mean we were sent an email to announce DB was leaving. Didn't we receive emails last year to announce teachers who were leaving?

We were at SSFS for years and we were always notified when teachers were leaving. They even included a nice little write up in the newsletter thanking them and listing all their wonderful accomplishments throughout their tenure.

What makes me most nervous is that I have to put all my trust in an anonymous stranger who has promised a blank check. Who gambles on anonymous strangers?

And our anonymous stranger has pledged money - pledged not in the bank - contingent on board changes. But can the stranger enforce these changes? If not and they don’t happen what happens to the money pledged? Doesn’t it go away? Because if it stays anyway why the condition? Might we then be in this position again next year? I don’t know the answers to these questions. It makes me so nervous.

Seems like a reasonable request. But when we ask reasonable questions we are being negative and never get clear answers.

That doesn’t work when you have mass exodus/layoffs.

No school is going to email parents in-time updates on which employee is leaving or staying. That is an unrealistic expectation, even in this scenario. If contracts are outstanding, they don’t know who is returning. They don’t know who will be teaching which grade. Teachers are qualified to teach multiple things, and when they have a sense of the student body, they will staff appropriately.

If you trust the school, you don’t need to know this level of detail.

I can understand why you don’t trust them right now. But these are not the actual things that will engender trust.

"If you trust the school?" Who trusts the school right now? Not even the rah-rah-rah-the-school-is-saved people could say they trust the school now.

Under normal circumstances what you say is true. These are not normal circumstances. SOMETHING more needs to be done to convince me to stay. doing NOTHING extra isn’t cutting it. You cannot say “no school is going to …” like anyone is unreasonable to want more. No school shuts down, no advance warning, reopens in one week, and expects ppl to act like business as usual.

NOTHING is normal with this school right now
