There is nobody with sufficient resources and power to put a check on the superintendent.

They literally are the power.

School board members get paid $25,000 a year, except for the school board president, who gets paid $29,000 a year.

No wonder we have such a poor board who can't do anything.

Yup. We need a full-time board, with quality candidates that have the knowledge and backbone to seriously hold MCPS accountable.

Is there a model for this anywhere else in the US? Or are all boards part-time and impotent like MCPS's?

I don't know about all situations, but a school system with 3B plus budget needs full time otherwise we are always going to attract incompetent part timers.

Easy. I'm sure they can find 8 useless and high paid roles in Central Office that should be eliminated. Move that budget to fund the salaries for full time BOE members who are actually competent.

Wouldn't paying board members from mcps budget thus make them MCPS employees, henceforth eliminating the oversight you all are calling for...???

Does their current part-time salary not come from MCPS budget? How would increasing it to full-time change their employment status?

I don't think so. The board staff positions are part of the operating budget, but not the board members themselves.

Yes, race and bias certainly played a factor as well as optics, but this is not about equity.

To the person who keeps saying they are a "moderate democrat" against these "far left" policies, and that we should vote "anyone" challenging boe candidates, I think you are some kind of right wing political (maybe paid even) lobbyist. Maybe that crazy Dawn woman. I don't know. But stop trying to make this some bash at equity. That is just a nasty DeSantis move.

All Dawn has done since this broke has posted about how much better of a board member she'd be. MASSIVE eyeroll. It's amazing anyone supported her to begin with. I know her on a personal level. Let's just say Stonegate has never been happier to see a student leave based on their parents. She's not feisty in the way she wants to be; she's a nightmare. No one ever spread lies about her; the awful things that went around were just the truth. She cannot handle it. She has absolutely no business being near public office. Teachers would never trust someone like her.

What about PBHS? Maybe Dawson should write that one.

+1000. She's begging teachers to talk to her right now under "confidentiality." I wouldn't trust her farther than I could throw her. I have my own experiences with her. The public did one thing right by not voting her into office.

Got divorced in April.

Wonder if his wife knew.

She showed up to the school yelling at him in the parking lot one day in March, so, yeah, probably.

Tell us more.

This is so untrue and unfair. Leave her out of it. I know her personally and she deserves to be kept out of all of this.

Does he have a drinking problem? It sounds like yes.

Definitely financial management problems per his record in case search.

Cases are: back taxes owed to the state of MD, foreclosure in 2010 which it looks like they managed to block using the relief provided by the Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act, a DUI in May 2013, and their recent divorce.

Always check misspellings in case search. Two months of lack of payment of rent last year as well with the i and e reversed in his name. Principals oversee large amounts in school accounts. I wonder if financial background checks are a thing for those roles?

You’d hope they would be.

I’m good, then, because I haven’t done any of this.

Well....for those of you twisting yourselves into knots trying to give McKnight the benefit of the doubt that she didn't know about the accusations, Jennifer Martin from the MCEA says otherwise:

Who cares about all of this. This man isn’t a celebrity to divulge his personal matters. Grown up people!

As an MCPS teacher, will I still be employed and promoted after a DUI? I didn’t think so. Why would the rules be different for principals?

Having DUI is not against mcps policy and yes you would still get promoted as a teacher with a DUI. Everyone is human.

Everyone is human—but all humans are accountable for our actions.

This man has a track record going back more than 10 years of bad behavior linked to alcohol and only the most recent stuff showed up in WaPo…so far. So, the stuff farther back is of course of interest.

The people on this board who work outside of the school system know that under no circumstances would we be promoted with any, never mind all, of those red flags. We live in the real world where we are held accountable for our actions. This helps us make good decisions. The lack of accountability for ones actions goes from the very top to each and every student who is called to write notes in the name of restorative justice instead of living with the consequences. The entire system needs a shake out.

MCPS is a dysfunctional, ridiculous school system.

MCPS is a dysfunctional, ridiculous school system.

When I think about all the good people, the strong teachers and administrators who have left in the last several years because they couldn’t be part of a system that didn’t share their values, or worse, they were gaslit and traumatized and ignored, I feel so angry. Our kids deserve better. The staff deserves better.
