Why is school open on Wednesday?

I know we get out two hours early but the schools are going to be half empty. This area has the worst traffic. Most people leave Wednesday morning or Tueday night to get out of town. What a waste of money.

Because not everyone leaves town. Because the state mandates a certain number d instructional days. Because a lot of people work and go to work on Wednesday. Feel free to petition your county to be closed and then add an extra day somewhere else.

then you will find students missing the Friday before and the Monday after. Just look at what happened when they expanded winter vacation to the full two weeks. Parents always stretch the days off. Then the teachers get flack if they, gasp, have a test or other requirement on that day.

We lose those randomly sprinkled days if there are too many snow days. Cannot get them back if they are gone before the snow comes.

Why shouldn't they have school Wednesday? Most people can't afford/don't travel far for the holiday.

That's about 13% of Americans traveling more than 50 miles.

Easy. Take your kids out of school and make arrangements to make up any work that they missed. This is no different than if you wanted to take your kid out of school for a family vacation on Columbus day weekend because you have an extra day. You are in the minority that is traveling early to get where you want to go, so you have to take responsibility for your choice. The majority who are staying in town want to have their kids in school for the day. Frankly, I really don't need to take an extra day off from work just because you want to start your holiday early.

You realize that teachers grade all the time and these days ease the rush of end of the quarter grading and paperwork that they have to do, on top of having to grade after school, well into the night and on the weekends, right?
