Hi guys! For Thanksgiving this year, I have been tasked with bringing hors d'oeuvres we can all snack on before we sit down for dinner. You guys always have such great ideas about this type of thing, so I was hoping you could suggest some stuff for me? I am thinking of doing 3 or so different things so everyone can find something they like. Here are the considerations:
1) There will be about 20 people in attendance. I don't know of any specific dietary restrictions, but surely there are a few picky eaters in the bunch, so nothing too weird. 2) My commute will be about an hour, so ideally, I'd like something that can travel well, or can be assembled quickly onsite. 3) Nothing too complicated, please. I am not the best cook, and I have three small children I will have to corral. Can't wait to hear what you guys come up with! Thanks! |
| My MIL always brings shrimp cocktail and it's always a hit. |
|
1) Veggies and french onion dip (one package of lipton, one container of sour cream, stir).
2)Cheese and crackers (I would do a cheddar, a blue, and a goat, and serve with table water crackers and triscuits). 3) Cream cheese shrimp dip (layer one block of cream cheese, one package of baby shrimp, one jar of cocktail sauce, serve with triscuits) Easy-peasy |
| There must be copious amounts of black olives for children to stick on all of their fingers. |

Excellent thread, I am doing the same and I am worried partially because my family has very high end tastes. I am not going to cater directly to these because I do what I want, but I am thinking about high/low.
So far I am thinking oysters, home made "pigs in a blanket" but with some really yummy chorizo. Outside of that I am not sure, although I will do a dip, something veg but comforting like artichoke. Excited to see what others are doing. |
Yes. Exactly this. And now I want all the snacks. |

Baked Brie with some fig or cherry jam. His isn't as easy but homemade spiced nuts (Mix almonds and cashews and walnuts, lay in tray and bake a little, mix honey and paprika and rosemary and pour in top, bake a little more. Break up and serve) amazing and addictive. You can look up the actual recipe.
I love lox roll ups with a little dill on top but that's not everyone's thing. Veggies and dip always works. For a change, get the biggest carrots you can find and cut them into circles as well as some cucumbers. Lays out prettier than sticks. |
This sounds great. There are some yummy recipes for easy, but delicious, artichoke dips out there if you google. Using a nice cheese will liven it up a bit. I would stick with what you have an then add a good cheese plate with some fun accompaniments - fig jam, good crackers/flatbread, cornichon... |
| Mixed nuts. This is good for all kinds of diets. |
| I've made dates stuffed with cheese wrapped in bacon for several recent gatherings and they are a HUGE hit. And super easy. I used goat cheese the first time but the second time, I used manchego which was way easier to stuff into the dates because they are harder. |

Standard Thanksgiving appetizers in my house involve
baked brie, another cheese plate, shrimp cocktail, and veggies/dip |
Cream cheese shrimp dip sounds disgusting. Do people actually eat this? |
OMG, I dated a guy in college whose mom served this at every family get-together. I had to turn my back to it to keep from gagging.

Costco has amazing shrimp cocktail.
Costco also has a great selection of cheeses.I am obsessed with the Manchego cheese they sell. I would do a lovely cheese plate with some grapes and crackers. A divided dish with different mixed nuts. I don't think I would do anything super heavy because Thanksgiving dinner is always heavy and then their is dessert. |
| We always have veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, and olives galore (we have never stuck them on fingers, but we should). |
