I lived in baltimore from 2006-2008. I heard gunshots weekly. I still felt safer walking in Mt. Vernon or Charles Village at night than downtown Fargo.

When I lived there I'd walk home by myself at 2 in the morning and never had any issues with crime. I lived over off 8th Avenue and 14th.

And, one tweet in the thread stood out to me.....

On being 'Rat Infested':

- *Every* person I spoke with *confirmed* that the district was rat infested
- This man told me that rats the “size of cats” run through his house regularly
- One woman told me rats have “taken over” her neighborhood
- One called it a "plague of rats"

And, then this tweet:

One of Rep. Elijah Cummings’ constituents went inside their home and returned with this flyer from the city begging them to help with the rat infestation.
The flyer said that the trash & "animal feces" in the neighborhood attract the rats.
The flyer was delivered *this week*

but anyway: i think you keep deliberately missing the point. if you aren't deliberately missing the point, then i think you might actually not be smart enough to engage in an actual conversation. either way, i will say once again: the issue isn't whether there are literally some rats in baltimore. trump did not just say, hey baltimore has some rats in it and i think it would be great if we could find a way for the federal government to help the city out with that, plus with some other problems. trump talked demeaningly, dismissively, disparagingly, grotesquely about the city and people who live there in an effort to discredit a member of congress who is doing his job of oversight over the executive branch. he talks this way about people of color - and only people of color - regularly. trump's language patterns taken as a whole are beyond troubling - they are thrilling to the white nationalists because THEY know what he's saying even if his ardent dcum supporters pretend not to.

anyway - good luck trying to go with this whole "black unemployment is down and baltimore DOES have rats in it - vote for trump!" thing.

It’s impossible for most racists to acknowledge their disdain and disgust for people unlike themselves. They will deny to the bitter end that they are racist, or that Trump’s constant disparaging remarks against minority communities are racist, despite every evidence to the contrary. The old adage “does a fish know it’s swimming in water?” applies here.

Allow me to share my perspective. I am a white person who grew up in a blue state but attended college at a deeply conservative SEC school. I had done extensive traveling throughout the US and world prior to college, and was aware that the school I had chosen would have a lot of viewpoints that weren’t my own. But to say that I was shocked by what I saw and heard by friends and acquaintances at this college would be an understatement. The remarks made about blacks and Hispanics were altogether foul. On the occasions that I spoke out against what these students were calling minorities, I was quickly told to STFU, because as a northerner, there was no way I could comprehend just how bad “these people” really are. I had one girl insist that slavery was not racist, but rather something that was done to people who were just lazy and stupid, never mind the fact that slaves in the US were all black. I knew just like her are girls who were pearl-wearing, sorority letter wearing southern belles who would never conceive of themselves as racist. It was simply beyond their ability or life experiences to critically evaluate their viewpoints.

What Trump is doing denigrating the Squad and now Baltimore is eerily similar to the experiences I had with these southern students years ago. You can’t make attack after attack on immigrants, people of color, and black communities using thinly veiled racial insults and expect the thinking public to not figure out where your true disdain lies.

There are extremely wealthy areas of Baltimore where people of means choose to live.

I work with a number of people who choose to live in Baltimore because they can afford a decent sized home there.

Actually, there's lots of musical talent in Baltimore, just as there is in Appalachian areas. Since it's more heavily populated with people living closer together, there are likely more rapists in Baltimore. Both places have many people living in poverty.
