Vance appeals to a very narrow group of constantly online , white nationalist, women hating dudes. They are really bad. He is getting at the replacement theory fear that white nationalists hold. There isn't enough time for Republicans to do an effective vetting process for someone new, and they sucked at vetting anyway with Vance. People will be all over their next pick and two failures would be a disaster.

Also, few respectable Republicans (maybe none) would want to be associated with Trump ticket now that Harris has momentum. It was a different thing when Biden was looking lackluster and Trump got a short-lived sympathy boost after the kid shooter shot him. It doesn't help that the kid was a loner, white male who came from a republican family. He's not the bogeyman POC they were hoping for.

The bolded text above suggests that “respectable” Republicans want to be associated with Trump if it weren’t for Harris.

I wonder which aspect of character a “respectable Republican” values in Trump?

The list of potentially respectable things Trump has done could go on and on. Might a respectable Republican appreciate Trump for having:
- been impeached twice
- been convicted of felonies
- cheated on his wife (wives?)
- tried to overturn election results
- escalated trade war with China
- stood up for those he hires or appoints
