Of corse Diana was. I think both Kate and Diana are (were, respectively) social climbers.

Yes but then would you count Meghan and her mom as social climbers as well?

Meghan, yea. Her mom…why? She hasn’t really received any benefit from Meghan being royal and unlike the Middleton’s doesn’t have (had) the type of business that benefits from the association.

+1, this is one of those allegations that feels transparently racist. I think a lot of people saw a black woman as the MIB at a royal wedding and felt she was way above her station, thus the idea that she's social climbing. But I bet you anything she would have preferred Meghan marry some American or Canadian actor/celeb and settle nearby in LA and not deal with all the BS they've been through in the last 7 years. I'm sure she likes Harry well enough and loves her grandkids, but it's not like Meghan was broke or struggling before Harry. She was on a successful TV show, making money, had a good and extensive group of friends.

I think in some ways Meghan got very unlucky in meeting Harry when she did, because she fell for him, they got married, and because of their age they immediately had kids, and now she's in the royal family in some capacity forever. I don't really think that's what Meghan's mom wanted for her, to be perfectly honest.

I loved their whole wedding but I thought her mother was particularly elegant.

She was and looked more more classy than Elizbeth and Camilla.

“Looked” classy rather than “is” classy. She deserted Meghan when she was 2 years old, returned when she was 9 and Meghan’s father was the custodial parent. Meghan had only a slight relationship with her mother until she needed at least one relative at the wedding. Meghan set her up in a dubious home health care business with no employees. It is similar to the business that Thomas Markel set up for her in which she paid no taxes. Markel bailed her out to avoid jail for her and this caused his bankruptcy.

Look a little more into Doria Ragland’s before you judge a book by its cover

Don’t try to play the race card. I am blacker than Meghan or her mother.

These are all unsubstantiated rumors.

Actually not. There are public records of the bankruptcies and the IRS actions and the nursing home and home health care businesses

That’s cool. Any comments on Party Pieces?

What about it? The Middletons ran it successfully for decades before it collapsed during Covid. The business helped launch their daughters to their present positions.

Or it was a front for Uncle Gary’s drug business and money laundering. YMMV.

It’s absolutely wild that uncle Gary is a regular contributor to the Daily Mail.

At both Royal Ascot and Wimbledon, she really dressed to stand out and apart from other people, including William and her kids. Like wearing that bright lipstick red dress at Royal Ascot felt like such a power move and made her look incredibly eye-catching. I heard on a podcast someone who was there mention how no one else was in that color or looked that bright and she really stood out.

And then at Wimbledon she was very purposeful with her outfit choices, wearing green for all three appearances. Her look on the first day was extremely reminiscent of outfits Diana used to wear (to me it was the biggest example of "Diana cosplay" Kate's every engaged in). But on the last day, she was there with William and the kids who were all dressed in blue and gray, but she was wearing bright emerald green. It just looked very intentionally like she was seeking to stand out, just like at Royal Ascot. I don't think she's accidentally wearing these really bright contrasting colors.

Part of it might be her taking a page from QEII (who in the second half of her reign intentionally started wearing monotone outfits in head to to bright shades) but I also think it's a tactical choice. She's also just been doing a ton of events in the last few months, more than William and way more than Charles or Camilla. I follow a lot of fashion websites and podcasts and with the Hollywood strikes they've been covering more royal fashion than usual and at this point it just feels like the Kate Middleton show. Which is kind of a bummer because from a purely fashion standpoint, her clothes are kind of boring. But from a PR standpoint, she's doing something very, very right, and I don't think it's by accident.

It really isn’t that deep. William is one step away from the throne and Kate is raising her profile as Princess of Wales.

With the increased money in her new role she may feel more able to buy things she’ll only wear once. If I was going to only wear an outfit once, I’d go for more bold choices. If you’re going to re-wear it for a couple different things, you might want it not to stand out so much. I do think she just seems more comfortable in her role lately.

I remember reading that when Diana married Charles the agreement was that her father would pay for a certain percentage of her clothing budget and Charles would cover the rest, for her official duties. Andrew and Sarah Ferguson also supposedly had the same deal. Diana’s father was much wealthier than Fergie’s so her clothes were better. I guess the royals have evolved since then.

I totally agree! I’m always curious how much coordination is involved between style teams and PR people. Do Charles and Camilla appreciate Kate stepping into the limelight a bit more, or do they dislike it because it takes the spotlight off them?

Far from a royal expert here, but it seems like the youngish royals are more of the “face” of the monarchy, even though they’re not the ones actually at the top yet. The older ones generally had their turn in the spotlight and are happy to let the others shine for them. The goal is to get the public to be invested in their family, and for that to happen the people want to see young vibrant happy families. At joint events I’m sure they defer to the king and queen, but otherwise it’s their job for the next 15-20 years to portray a happy stable somewhat glamorous family.

Except this is not even remotely what it has been like under the last few monarchs. Charles and his sibs were NEVER the "face" of the monarchy when QEII was alive. It was always the Queen. Even when Charles and Diana were together and before the cracks were really starting to show, it was the Queen. And of course her father died while she was still young, but she and Phillip were certainly not the face of the monarchy even after they'd married and had children.

Even when the Queen was getting much older and in ill health, she remained the true face of the monarchy and Charles was always Charles. And Camilla, in particular, was not made a central figure.

Furthermore, the issue is that Kate is being made the central figure (or is making herself the central figure) even more than William. She is not the heir. But she is among the most popular members of the family in polling.

Hard to say if she's taking center stage out of obligation to the family or if she is capitalizing on her popularity relative to others. I have a hard time believing Charles and William would be happy about it, to be honest. They both have a history of disliking having to share the spotlight or cede the spotlight to others.

Nah, people went nuts for Diana and her kids. They need to see the next generation to get excited for the future of the monarchy.

Elizabeth called Kate the future of the BRF, the most important royal. Who are we to argue with her?

QEII never once said this. It would actually be a huge deal if she did, as it would be seen as a massive slight to both her son and grandson as heirs. Within the royal family, the monarch is always the most important. Always. Everyone else plays a role. The queen might have believed Kate was well suited to her role (she is) but she definitely would not have viewed Kate as more important than William, or even Charles. She may very well have viewed William as more important than Charles, under the belief that Charles' reign will be short. But (1) Charles could easily live another 20 years, and (2) even if she did think that, that doesn't mean Charles thinks that, which is all that matters now since he is king.

Kind of like how QEII wanted Camilla to be called Queen Consort and then once she was dead, Charles said nope, she's the queen.

The monarch makes the rules.
