"Hale shot open a locked door to gain entrance to the school, officials said."

Serious question, does anyone with school aged children think of moving countries to avoid the possibility of their child getting shot every time they go to school? Or do you take other measures such as sending your child to a school with heavy security where this is less likely to happen? I honestly don’t know what I would do if I lived in the USA.

I would reconsider, to be honest with you. You should be horrified. The leading cause of death in children is now homicide: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/article-abstract/2799356
If you can afford private where there is heavy security, then do it, but guns are everywhere, and we have become a divisive country where people don't know how to get along with anyone anymore. That said, it's not just the schools you have to worry about. Until our politicians do something about this, there will be no improvement in sight.

That article certainly stresses that all those homicides were by school mass shooting, and not at all due to abuse, neglect, and gang membership....

Three seconds about victims. “My thoughts and prayers, BUT, I want to thank the first responders.” Earlier news, Police Chief said 6 kids were killed. He’s not too bright. They need to prove they’re not as dumb as Uvalde responders.

The police did exactly what they were supposed to do and saved lives. They deserve praise.

Kids still died. #fail

Not the police's fault.

It is everybody's fault. We failed our kids.

We have their thoughts and prayers. Doesn't that stop bullets or do they just call fake news when children actually die?

Idiot. Blame the shooter, please.

I blame the shooter and the easy access to weapons.

I blame the shooter and the easy access to weapons, especially assault-style rifles which make it even easier to shoot more people efficiently.

This past week in my hometown, I saw a man with a gun on his hip coming out of a restaurant. No problems, peaceful. Same week, another man robbed a local grocery store at gunpoint and took the police on a chase with girlfriend and baby in the car. Care to guess who'd more likely to own the legal gun? I wonder what would have happened if peaceful gun-owner was in the store at the same time that robber was there. He surely would have noticed the gun on peaceful man's hip. Would he have committed the crime as a result?

Spare us the good guy with a gun shit.

Don't you have to pass a test and get a license to drive? You don't have to do shit to own a gun.

Right now NRA and GOP are all for gun rights. When their loved ones get gunned down then they will have no place to run to. It is just a matter of time.

That is why Wayne Lapierre hides his house. I wonder what he is afraid of, good guy with a gun.

Oh wow, my heart goes out to the shooter’s family as well. It doesn’t sound like one of those scenarios in which some gun nuts encouraged their ill kid to get into guns. I can’t imagine the pain of knowing your child did something this horrific while also going through the grieving process for that child. I hope that mother has a good support network because she is going to have a lot of conflicting emotions as she deals with her grief.

Agreed. And notice the father was not interviewed.

That’s right, driving is not regulated, we don’t do tests, issue licenses, have medical requirements for drivers.

Firearms are the number one cause of death for children in the United States since July 2022.

I will get a bit of joy to see parents if dead children interviewed and asked if they had been gun freedom supporters.

I would like them to be asked, where were all the good guys with the guns as their children were being butchered.

All you people who are digging hills against gun reforms are accomplices. You are partially responsible for this.

A source close to the Hale family told The Daily Beast on Monday night that Hale was autistic, but high-functioning.

“And relatively recently announced she was transgender, identifying as he/him,” the source said, asking to remain unnamed so as to avoid additional family strife.

Reached by phone, Hale’s mother, Norma Fort Hale, told an ABC News reporter, “It’s very difficult now, we ask for privacy. I really can’t talk right now, I think I lost my daughter today.”

Well that checks out. She probably lost her son a long time ago. My mom lost me and I don’t know any trans people on good terms with their parents and I know a lot of other trans people. I’m sure someone out there exists but it seems pretty common to be completely estranged from one or both parents once you come out as trans. It just further isolates trans people if they don’t go out and try to find community and found family.

As the mother of a trans kid, I did not isolate my kid - my kid isolated me. Ask a question? PHOBIC!! Express a concern about treatment interfering with medicated conditions? PHOBIC! BIGOT! Spouse to me in private: "If you ask anything, our kid will commit suicide!" Me: "That sounds more like blackmail"

No, but what a nice distraction.

Conservatives will continue to do nothing and if the shooter is trans (not confirmed at this time), perfect example of how they will continue to deflect from ACTUAL SOLUTIONS THAT WILL SAVE LIVES.

Stop the deflection and start with solutions.

We can’t control people but we can guns.

You can only control guns that are LEGAL. You can only infringe on freedoms of law abiding citizens. You can't do anything about criminals, who will retain have access to their guns. Hey, lets make some more laws to punish law abiding gun owners, especially those who own those scary looking rifles.

Most of the gun nuts are cowards who need something for them to bully others.

This. 100%.

Nobody who feels safe, or knows themselves to be a difficult target, anxiously demands the right to carry firearms. My dad was a silent martial arts master (Kalaripayattu) who not only knew how to wield several weapons, but knew how to block someone's "chi" and weaken them using just his fingers. He was so peaceful that a butterfly could land on his hands, and he certainly never felt the need to carry guns around. At the same time, nobody could cow him, and gangsters who tried to mess with him ended up with broken bones. He was so lethal that he deliberately lived gently.

Republican gun nuts are the exact opposite of this martial arts ideal. They are not real men, in my opinion.

He was a good guy with a gun. He had one. No one got shot. It wasn't brandished.
