I didn’t know legacy mattered much at all for public’s. |
Thanks. Appreciate the Reddit approach. Thanks. |
Thank you for the info! Love the nane HoHum. So, once they select honors community, do they also need to select housing, or does the housing go with the honors community. |
Actually, I don't think magnet sent a profile this year. Counselors highlighted "magnet" on the transcript, but I don't think they sent a separate profile. Ostrander sent a profile and letter out to everyone in the program so they can include it. At least that's our take. DD has been adding content from that pdf in tge additional notes section on the common app. |
Housing goes along with the honors community. |

Going to UMD even 10 years ago was considered a financial compromise for Montgomery County kids.
Impressive how far the school has come in the past 20 years academically, even if its ranking is still so-so. |
Congratulations! |
This same story is playing out all across the country. I went to a B rated state univ out west, but now apparently, even that univ is harder to get into now. People I know who went to Cal or UCLA wouldn't be able to get in today with their stats. There are just many many more kids who are applying to colleges now. IMO, bachelor degree is becoming almost useless now. A masters is what a bachelors degree was 30 years ago. |
| Does anybody know what is the lowest SAT to include with application before deciding to do test optional? |
wot? |
I wonder why they are no longer doing this. IMO the profile really helps an accomm to understand the level of rigor required by the program. It also helps the school evaluate the individual magnet student vis a vis their peers. Getting straight As in MCPS is easier than it used to be but a relatively small number of magnet students achieve this (relatively speaking). I think the magnet profile is very informative. |
Not everyone from CAP magnet gets in. I know a few who have been denied. |
PP here. Agreed. I think the onus of including it this year was on the students. Ostrander sent pdfs for the profile and letter out. I think in previous years counselors sent it, but I'm pretty sure my kid checked, and the only thing the counselor did was highlight the "magnet" designation on the transcript. The pdfs came after EA cutoffs, but DD add info later, and UMF knows this program will, so not a big deal. We selected info from the profile to include on other apps in the "add'l info" section (or whatever it's called). I believe Ostrander advised this. |
Magnet meant SMACS. that program at Blair is usually called "Magnet" whereas CAP is called "CAP." I don't know what CAP has in the way of a profile or if anything is sent out. |
