No one wants to move to 6-8

Most of the middle schools are 7-8.

The 6-8 middle schools need to be eliminated so the middle schools are uniformly 7-8.

You don't speak for everyone. 6-8 MS provides more opportunities for talented students, whether it be academically, musically, athletically (so weird FCPS doesn't have middle school sports like the rest of the state), etc.

All future CIP planning should emphasize building or expanding middle schools to handle 6-8 rather than adding any capacity to elementary schools.

We have lived all over tge country.

Never have we seen school sponsored middle school sports beyond fun club type sports like running clubs.

The only exception is private schools.

I understand that the bigger problem for FCPS is the size of the MS, there isn't room to add another grade and that is not likely to change. That is probably the best reason to not have 6-8 in MS.

My friends in LCPS are fine with their kids going to middle school as 6th graders, it has not been an issue. The school I attended in California had MS from 7-9, the HS was 10-12. Class sizes were large, 600 kids, and I think they wanted to avoid really massive HS.

Most the kids in my son's 8th grade class are 13/14 years old. I don't know of any 15-year-old in the group that moved from his ES to MS. One his good friends is an October birthday, same year, and is in 7th grade as a 13-year-old. I am going to guess that 15 in 8th grade is rare. I think that 11/12 6th graders are fine in a MS environment. The current cut off for enrollment would make it hard for a kid to be 10 in sixth grade. I don't see much harm in having an 11-14 year old age gap at a school.

FCPS does not have sports for middle schools? That’s wild to me.

I grew up in PWCS and middle school was 6-8 and we had sports. Is that not the norm around NOVA anymore?

Not the norm, and hasn't been since at least the 1990’s

Not in FCPS middle schools and hasn't been since forever. At least the 1980s.

APS has had grade 7 and 8 sports for many decades. (And now 6th graders too.) FCPS is adding sports very slowly.

It is the 3rd year of having Cross Country and Outdoor track as sports in FCPS for Middle School. Most schools have official unofficial volleyball and basketball teams and host 3-4 team tournaments.

Loudoun and Prince William do 6-8 middle schools.

What’s their scheduling pedagogy?

I’m confused. The school board is doing a boundary public hearing Saturday morning on Reid’s recommendations but those recommendations won’t be shared until Thursday night? One day to digest recommendations for a huge county? More evidence of check the box community engagement.

Oh and signup to speak closes the day before the recommendation is released?

The recommendations could be posted on Board Docs before Thursday night. There is a School Board meeting on Thursday night where Reid presents her recommendations to the SB but they could be posted earlier. It’s still ridiculous that they haven’t been posted already, but Reid has shown time and time again that she doesn’t know how to manage a school system this large.

I’m just waiting to see what the 2027-31 CIP says.

Also, if you want to speak at that meeting, the item comes up at 10:30 p.m. according to the schedule.

I wonder if they’ll change the contents of the CIP so it’s harder to tell how much is being spent on Western and which projects have been delayed or ignored as a result of the purchase of KAA.

It COULD be posted before Thursday, but given their track record, the document won’t be posted until Friday, and the community will feed off screen caps captured during the presentation at the school board meeting.
